This predominance has resulted in the majority of #Labour Councillors being women - twenty two out of a total of thirty five elected.

There is some uncertainty as to whether this practice can continue in future since it may violate the law on equal opportunities.

However my understanding is that it remains in place at present.

In the UK the position is a bit more nuanced than the toot implies.

Currently #Labour policy is to use reserved candidacies to produce at least parity of numbers between women and men.

Ahead of the #Localelections last year I took part in the implementation of this process in my borough. The results were exact parity overall - twenty nine each - in terms of candidates selected but a predominance of women in contests #Labour was deemed likely to win.
