To close the Op. 54 Marionetten, Bortkiewicz gives us Kasperl-Harlekin (or “Punch-Harlequin” in English, my sheets say, or “Guignol” en français). In this set, there’s a correlation — but I don’t think causation — between sounds-like-a-marionette and uses-whole-tone-scale.

This sweet one, #2 of Bortkiewicz’s Op. 39 Kindheit (“Childhood”), is called “Maman” (“Mama”). The suite is based on the Tolstoy novel. We’ll hear more of it.
