I'm attending an AHRC (UK Arts and Humanities Research Council) 'fellows' conference today, with the theme "Developing and sustaining a career in the arts and humanities". All eleven speakers are academics so I'm not holding out hope for any perspectives on arts and humanities careers outside academia. Considering the number of PhD students vs number of academic postdoc positions, this seems a bit of a flaw.. As far as I understand it, biomedical researchers find it _bizarre_ that someone would want to spend their whole research career working for a university, but for some reason Arts and Humanities academics see leaving a University to work elsewhere as failure.. Often in the same breath complaining about how difficult it is to get anything done as an academic. #ukriflf
