Smart motorways are "smart" because they enforce speed limits to get a better flow of traffic at busy periods.
They are not safe if they remove, as you say, a safer place to stop immediately because of car problems!

Yesterday ,we set off in rain following a gritter,by 5 miles on it was snowing ,by the time we returned 15 mins or so later,this was the gritted road,if you dont need to travel when snows forecast its much better to defer the trip ,we have winter tyres and are used to the roads and weather ,but this would be hard driving in normal tyres if your not used to snow covered roads

We got a smattering of snow ,but I suspect further out theres been more,the workmen who live in Dingwall and those in Alness didnt arrive today and they have been turning up in high winds and sub zero temp .The younger chickens werent sure what had happened to their world and made the mistake off running out into the white stuff before fleeing back ,my oldies just stood at the door waiting for breakfast in bed,My tiny broody is inside
