This doesn't surprise me at all. Westminster's actions in denying Scotland a referendum don't make sense if they truly want to keep the UK together. I suspect that the Tories would be happy to be rid of all us troublesome Celts, but they're too afraid to admit it.

I am so sorry to my friends in #Scotland regarding the decision of the #UKSupremeCourt today regarding the #IndependenceReferendum - I do, however, hope that this decision can be challenged and that there will be an opportunity for the Scottish people to exercise a decision for autonomy that doesn’t involve a mandatory consent from WM.

There is no good case for the 'union.' The #UKSupremeCourt decision makes that obvious. They've had to make keeping Scotland in the 'union' a legal matter. This is desperation.

In "1707, England & Scotland were officially “United into One Kingdom by the Name of Great Britain. The agreement lent Scotland economic security & access to England's colonial trade network; England gained a safeguard against France, as well as the Jacobite supporters of the deposed James II."

It's a very different kettle of fish now & many #Scots changed their minds a while ago. The #EU may now provide more security.

The UK isn't a confederation, it's a unitary state with devolution. So the ruling that the Scottish Parliament cannot call an independence referendum is unsurprising in hindsight.

However I do think any multinational state should be held together by consent and that it is morally wrong that they can't.

Unanimous decision of #UKSupremeCourt that #ScottishGovernment canNOT introduce a Bill relating to #reservedmatters, in this case a lawful #IndyRef2 referendum. The proposed Bill has more than a ‘lose connection’ to reserved matters, i.e. the Union and UK Parliament. The Bill therefore relates to reserved matters and the #ScottishParliament cannot legislate on Scottish independence.

I am beyond disgusted by the #UKSupremeCourt decision on #Scotland and #ScottishIndependence but it's exactly what I expected.
