in 2017 I could get the 07:05 CrossCountry train from Leeds and arrive into Birmingham New Street at 09:10 (a journey time of 02 hours 05 mins), whereas
tomorrow the same company's 06:12 from Leeds is scheduled to tootle into New Street at 09:08 (02 hours _56_ mins) #UKtrains

I've been travelling between Manchester and Bristol for nearly two decades now. The train line for this route goes north into Glasgow/Edinburgh and south into Cornwall. I've been north but not south. So I thought it would be a good idea to find out what would happen if we went as far south & west as we could.

So, far we've had one train cancellation & the promise of a rail replacement bus, extending the journey time by over an hour. I've probably had better ideas

I'm no expert but I do use Thameslink & always assume the delays are so common because every train had done a long rural haul (with scope for cumulative trouble) before even leaving central LOndon.
Services terminating/starting in London have a big advantage as they can start on time.

Maybe someone with some understanding of #railways can explain the logic of this. The #avantiWestCoast 1653 out of #Euston is set-down only at #Rugby, except on Fridays. I was on the train today getting off at Rugby, it was pretty empty yet staff were telling people not to board it. Similar two hours later and also some services at Stafford. A direct Rugby-Manchester service would be pretty useful, I can't for the life of me work out why this restriction exists (but not on Friday). #uktrains

Of course #AvantiWestCoast is broken this evening: day has a "Y" in it.

Oh this is absolutely nuts. As someone who regularly has to travel on Avanti West Coast trains I can confirm that their performance over the last six months has been absolutely dire, with hundreds of trains cancelled every week.

And so the government has handed them a £6.5 million "operational performance" bonus.

#losing - traveling home by train. First train didn't reach it's destination. Connecting service cancelled before starting.
I fully intend to not run across multiple platforms in Manchester to *maybe* catch the next train East. I shall amble to M&S, stock up on Percy Pigs, and then get whatever train is ready after that.
