This week's #SundaySong is a very low-fi, low-tech rendering of The Velvet Underground's "After Hours." One take, with mistakes, recorded directly with an iPhone, 'cause I'm on vacation and this was what I could do. I started out doing this as a bass-only song, which works pretty well, but the uke chords are pretty nice, too, so that's what you get this time around.

@PetervanAlphen my band, Snake Suspenderz, started with me on #ukulele and Thaddeus on ‘Sri Oompa’ (a rescued sousaphone). ol’ Sri was in pieces, being used as garden decorations. Thadd talked the lady out of it, cleaned it up, and duct taped the pieces together. the mighty Snakez ended up with me (mostly) on ukulele and vocals, Thadd on damn near anything he picked up, and salamandir on a big old C tuba.

ukulele variants and #tuba variants go together like scotch and soda.

Might stick to only one new addition to the project folder today, taking it easy in the heat. This one is surprisingly low on both the number and difficulty of chords compared to many tunes of the time, making it pretty straightforward to get the hang of.

@billba #Bass & #ukulele is common. When I started bass, I was jamming with it after just 6 days of practice.

Here's my short course on bass: Play the root note at the start of the bar, and the rest is improv. You can rarely go wrong with a 1-5 pattern. Anticipate where the chord sequence is going, and walk up or down to the next root. If you hit the wrong note, few will notice as long as you maintain the rhythm/groove. If you miss a note, don't sweat it, just continue with the next note.

@KFuentesGeorge I play ukulele and bass. Ukulele is relaxed and unpretentious. Bass is great! But also demanding. There's a lot of pressure on the bass player, but I've never had so much fun playing music since I started playing bass five years ago.

Another song finds its way into the Cliff Edwards Project, this one from a Buster Keaton movie in which Cliff also appeared. I also revisited the songsheet for "Night Owl" and tweaked a few things to make it more playable. Free to download, like the other tunes there. The aim is to make them a little more widely known and played, because too many great songs are all but forgotten.

One of Cliff's signature tunes makes it's way to the Cliff Edwards Project. I might go back and change the key once I've played it a little more, depending how it feels to play. The sheet music is written for a uke tuned to Bb (arrangement by "Ukulele Dick" Konter, I was surprised to see. That was his nickname, not his medical condition).
