Might stick to only one new addition to the project folder today, taking it easy in the heat. This one is surprisingly low on both the number and difficulty of chords compared to many tunes of the time, making it pretty straightforward to get the hang of.

A couple of Ted Fiorito tunes added to the project folder today, both of them quite bright and fun to play. Songsheets are free to access and download, of course, and Cliff's performances are easily found on YouTube.

Not that this is turning into an obsession is anything, but I just bought a Cliff Edwards LP on eBay because it seems to be the only source of several tunes he recorded. Hasn't been digitised or reissued in the fifty years since it was released.
My record player broke in 1995 and I haven't had one since, which presents a tiny problem to overcome.
One of the better known tunes on the list makes its way to the Cliff Edwards Project folder today. A surprising number of chords in the original sheet music, but the less common ones are easy to omit or substitute if preferred.

Another song finds its way into the Cliff Edwards Project, this one from a Buster Keaton movie in which Cliff also appeared. I also revisited the songsheet for "Night Owl" and tweaked a few things to make it more playable. Free to download, like the other tunes there. The aim is to make them a little more widely known and played, because too many great songs are all but forgotten.

Another song sheet typed up for the Cliff Edwards Project, "Paper Doll," which might be something of a self own on the part of the author, but it's still a fine song as Cliff so ably demonstrates:

"Sensational comedy song hit" or regrettably sexist novelty number? Either way, Cliff sang it, so I've typed up a song sheet and added it to the project folder.

Added another song sheet to the project folder last night:

I'm slowly putting together individual ukulele sheets for (almost) every song that Cliff Edwards recorded in his annoyingly prolific career. You can find the completed sheets, as well as the titles I'll be adding to the pile, here:

A few hours spent working on my Cliff Edwards project. Having previously listed all of the individual tracks I own (250+), this evening I added titles from Larry F. Kiner's discography… which has taken the total to 413. I haven't added songs that are only incidentally included in his many film appearances, because I have to stop somewhere; there are bound to be a number of unavailable recordings here anyway. How he found time to be an alcoholic I don't know.

"Ukulele Ike croons a tune", a scene from the movie "Those Three French Girls" (1930).
Great view of Edwards' playing style in this short clip.

I need to get back to my Cliff Edwards project, an attempt to make a ukulele songsheet for every song Cliff recorded. They aren't the most accurate adaptations and I strongly doubt I'll ever finish (not helped by pitiful music theory skills), but I'd like it to at least reach a point where others might find it useful.

On this day in 1895, Clifton Avon Edwards was born in Hannibal, Missouri.
He introduced songs like "Singin' in the Rain", sold millions of records, appeared on Broadway and in more than a hundred films, including with Buster Keaton and (off screen) in "Gone with the Wind". He was the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Disney's "Pinocchio" and sang "When You Wish Upon a Star".
An incredible performer, exceptional singer and unique musician.

I knew that Cliff Edwards had been cast in "Gone with the Wind", but as the final cut only features his off-screen voice I'd naturally not seen him in it. Never thought to check Wikipedia! This photo shows him—just about—playing a wounded soldier.

Quite a rare track these days, one I don't recall from any current compilations. The quality—both the state of the recording and the tune itself—is pretty mediocre, but there's almost always something to enjoy in a Cliff Edwards number.

If anyone other than a #ukulele fan remembers Cliff Edwards these days then it's usually for his role as the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio, but at his peak he was a huge recording star and prolific supporting actor. I've been slowly gathering a collection of ukulele songsheets for the tunes he recorded and was thrilled to find so many on this site. Plenty of other classics (and rarities) too:
