Once, I had to go into a dimly lit storage room at work. As I entered, I saw a person sitting quietly in the gloom. I was startled, not expecting to find anyone in there at all, and quickly mumbled an apology.

And then my brain registered that it was not a person, because it was unnaturally still and silent and thus couldn’t be alive, so for a split second I felt both relief (that I hadn’t just rudely burst in on someone) and silly (for apologizing unnecessarily).

And THEN my brain registered that there was something human-shaped but not alive and I felt an overwhelming sense of horror that I was in a small, crowded, and dimly lit storage room with something that looked like a human but wasn’t.

And then another split second later, I realized it was just a mannequin and I think I actually laughed out loud with relief. I felt ridiculous but giddy and unnerved for a while after.

And that is how I learned, viscerally and subjectively and not just theoretically, about the #UncannyValley.

So I've started porting my #Machiavelli #Ruby #IRC #bot #plugin (how's that for hashtags, uh?) to #Python, which has been a rather frustrating experience so far. I'm much more comfortable with Ruby than Python, but the languages are similar enough that the differences fall into that grating #uncannyValley experience. Also lots of bugs due to syntactical and behavioral differences (e.g. index() raising an exception instead of returning the null type). But things are moving forward.

Anyone else here finding they’re asking themselves more and more whether an article, image, video etc they’re looking at is #AI-generated?

More and more I’ve been noticing that I’m on the lookout for tell-tale signs like glitches in voices, extra limbs, or just an #UncannyValley feeling that something is...off.

In 1970, Japanese robotics professor Masahiro Mori introduced the idea of the #UncannyValley where things that are too near human are just creepy.

Sometimes, machines need to be somewhat humanoid to work in environments shaped for humans; for those, let form follow function.

Toy #robots are fun.

But making a machine anthropomorphic just because you can? I can think of many better uses for the money, like helping those in need, feeding the hungry, healing the sick, etc.
