A primary criticism I have of modern #therapy is: #Therapists don't tell you what the goals are.

So I'm thinking, "what are the goals of therapy?" And I'm reminded of McLuhan's "The Medium Is the Message" - the idea that HOW something is communicated can be more important than WHAT.

What, then, is the medium of therapy? To teach us #UnconditionalAcceptance of ourselves. To self-soothe. To model care for us until we learn to do it for ourselves. To teach us to become our own therapists.

Aha.

One of my favorite quiet revelation moments was when Rich encouraged me to get a warm embrace from #freemomhugs a few years ago at #annarborpride.

In that moment, I was able to let go of all the homophobic crap my parents put me through and be present in a reality where they didn't matter, because there are so many other people out there who care. Deeply. 🤗 -Jae
