Perhaps “Mattina” is Ungaretti’s best-known poem, partly because of its extreme brevity. It is a landscape poem with no landscape in it, no history, and no person but the poet. It comes from a soldier’s view of nature, being written presumably after or during a night in the open, in danger; for Ungaretti began his career as Italy’s war poet of the Great War. Since the first translations of haiku were made in the West, some of the greatest writers of the twentieth century have grown fond of this poetic genre, from Rainer Maria to Paul . In Italy, some poets who have embraced the current of hermeticism, such as and , approached haiku. Famous is that of Ezra Pound with his urban :

"The appearance of these faces in the crowd,/Petals on a wet, black bough."
