Today is Labor Day for our American colleagues, and it's a perfect occasion to discuss reasons for unionization.
Some facts:
Workers' productivity has steadily grown in the past 45 years, yet their pay hasn't kept up with this increase. The workers generate more profits each year, but these profits do not return to workers proportionally to their productivity levels.

Tech companies have started tracking our badges to make sure we come into offices. It’s only a matter of time until they start making us badge out to track how long we’re there, or track our phones to make sure we don’t go to the snacks too often, etc. #UnionizeTech
“Zuckerberg acknowledged that announcing the layoff plans ahead of time creates a period of uncertainty but “it’s not like we can just pause working while we are figuring this out.””
Uh, you literally can. It’s called a strike. #UnionizeTech
We should Unionize maybe?

Very glad for the sage advice from execs this morning that I should get my motivation at work from keeping customers happy and generating value for shareholders, not from, or better yet completely in spite of, whether I'll still have a paycheck/healthcare/visa/teammates next week.
I feel motivated alright…
Woke up thinking about the months of uncertainty that all my European coworkers are facing about whether they’ll have jobs, visas, etc. all while they are still expected to come into work and mindlessly produce more value for the same shareholders and execs who made this choice.
Sundar Pichai can go fuck himself into the next century.
Every exec, board member, and voting investor that had anything to do with this can join him.
Why did Google lay off so many people, of all tenures, seniority, and performance levels, despite having made a fuckton of money last year? As far as I can tell, to make investors happy. And it looks like it did. #TechLayoffs #UnionizeTech
Just listened to this podcast from Oxide about the recent wave of tech layoffs. The podcast is hosted by a bunch of tech executives, and while they rebuke the manner in which Elon fired everyone, and even the “endemic” of layoffs in general — they even call for regulation to somehow prevent what Elon did from happening again — not a single mention is made of employee organizing.
The last thing your execs want is for you to have power. Organize.
It’s a good thing people’s mental health needs decrease in a recession!
I can think of a few “benefits” I’m sure Zuck enjoys that they could cut and probably save a lot more than $76 million.
