I’ve never noticed this until today: Boise computing history! Really love the sign.

Early . Mom worked for S. Reid Warren (conservancy.umn.edu/handle/112), in an office close to Eckert's & Mauchly's at Penn's Moore School. So many of my friend's folks worked for (computerhistory.org/revolution).

This sign reminds me of one I'd see when out running near El Camino, in Mountain View (CA) area—was in front of a closed Oreck store (near San Antonio Center?); maybe the first Silicon Valley semiconductor plant?

@cross @soaproot @b0rk 1100 running EXEC-8 used six characters per 36-bit word, or four 9-bit characters, and you can be assured that EXEC-8 programmers also used those “extra” bits in each character for other stuff.

That encoding offered app developers one or two flag or control bits per character, as ASCII fits in 7 bits. 8-bit ASCII with CSI and friends is less than ubiquitous to this day.

Some 6-bit code is still latent in 64-bit VSI to this day, and probably including within the x86-64 port. Last time I met that RAD50 was deep inside the OpenVMS file system code.

@rst @nomiddlename @thomasfuchs Here's some photos of 80 and 90 column cards used on UNIVAC computers.

I did my first CS FORTRAN projects on punch cards, and my ability to touch-type meant I could use the IBM 029 keypunch with the broken printing mechanism. The lines for that machine were shorter.

4 years later, I wrote my first TCP/IP stack for a 1108 mainframe (with a whole 1 MB of core memory). I'd moved beyond punch cards by then 🙂 The 1108 still had a card reader, though

I guess every generation thinks it's the first to ever be deplatformed, but I've been going through this ever since the mainframe moved from the 1110 to the Cyber 73 in 1977. MECC to , FORUM*H7LT309 to to Usenet to Citadels and Fidos... platforms come, and platforms go, for all sorts of reasons. Yeah, good things are lost, but the chance to build better is also present.

Gotta roll with the flow folks, adapt and improve.

Found a pretty interesting drawing template for flowcharts at Art Parts in today. Not particularly useful but I couldn't resist when I saw the branding on it.

I once bought a Univac data tape (like in this picture) for $80 on eBay. A year later I sold it there for $860. Why? I'd discovered from it's serial number that it had been used by the Great Northern Railway. It was from one of the earliest computer installations in the US. Railroad collectors went nuts over it.
The tape itself is nickel-plated phosphor bronze. It was heavy! It had 6 data tracks and the tape could hold 1.5 Mb of data. (disclaimer: I now despise eBay)

A Functional Diagram of the UNIVAC File Computer in 1951.

The UNIVAC, or Universal (business & science) Automatic Computer became synonymously w/ computer prior to IBM dominating the industry mid 1950s & beyond.

1st one went to US Census dedicated in June '51. UNIVAC predicted the landslide Eisenhower victory in the 1952 election on CBS.
