En un principio, los #JoyDivision no estaban muy conformes con el resultado de su álbum debut, #UnknownPleasures, publicado el 15 de junio de 1979. Es que los de Saldford pretendían plasmar en el disco la virulencia de sus presentaciones en vivo. Pero el productor Martin Hannet tenía otros planes que los implementó con gran meticulosidad. Según Stephen Morris, el más perjudicado por su minuciosa tarea, “hacía que todo sonara más chiquito”. El baterista se refería a la tarea para apartar los sonidos (incluso cada una de las secciones de la batería se grabaron por separado) valiéndose del Marshall Time Modulator y lograr algo limpio y claro, pero terriblemente agotador para los músicos. Así se llevó adelante parte del proceso de un trabajo que se volvería innovador.
