Many many unpaid carers across the UK are doing it tough with little or no acknowledgement from govt, not least economic support. #CarersWeek #CarersWeek2023 #UnpaidCarers #DWP

If my role as an unpaid carer is valued then why do I have to choose “homemaker” or “unemployed” when filling out forms and/or making applications such as home insurance? #unpaidcarers

Any #unpaidcarers out there had to justify the need to go get something to eat, sleep, have a shower, get changed or even go to the toilet when in hospital caring for a disabled relative?

It’s the simple things in life, the very necessary things, that many in paid employment take for granted. A shower, a bath, sleep, going to the toilet, eating lunch or dinner in peace. Many #unpaidcarers struggle to find time for these basics. Unpaid should mean unfairly treated.

When your parent has to sell her house to pay for their care, the loss is more than the money. It’s a person that’s being lost, a person you know, even if they have mental or physical disabilities, or are lost in the fog of #dementia.

Following the short film Joff and I made this summer as a "Voices" project for the new National Care Service - I was asked to blog about unpaid caring also.
So I submitted the prose piece I did, inspired by @therealdoctort
I'm glad/surprised they published it, cos it is a reality of how fucking tough unpaid caring is, and the national conversation we urgently need to have about the future of social care.

In the run up to Carers Rights Day (24th November) I often hear #carers saying that it's such a pointless day because in Scotland (and the rest of the UK) they seemingly have no rights.
This makes me sad and angry.
The issue isn't that Carers have no rights, it's the fact that those in positions of power and authority refuse to acknowledge those rights!
Demand your rights.

@SuzanneCulshaw Absolutely can relate to this. My hubby had a severe bleed stroke 4 years ago. Our world changed in an instant. Love him to bits, but sadness on both sides - trying to stay happy & on top of it ... despite ... one of the millions #UnpaidCarers 💖

Interesting idea by Eve Wiseman on twitter - say out loud & quite baldly what you want from life. Some serious replies, some fun ones.
I'd like a social revolution that recognises & brings forward allies of unpaid carers. I just learned that the labour of 10m unpaid carers is worth £193bn pa. (see yer actual rage inducing £37bn for thon Track and Trace for comparison) but it's like we're all but invisible to society.
We so badly need justice and support.
RT @CarersNI: As #CarersWeek begins, we're looking forward to lots of engagement with all Stormont parties to deliver the change that #unpaidcarers need.
During this week, and the rest of the Assembly mandate, we'll keep advocating for greater support for all carers across Northern Ireland.

RT @AddressingLife: My time capsule narrative for the Irish census. Forgive the awful handwriting. Arthritis in my hands doesn't allow for lovely penmanship anymore. Ah, well. Point made, I hope. May 2122 be a damn sight better! #Disability #carers #unpaidcarers #Census
