Migrating servers over a 20Mbit/s uplink feels a bit like #dialup.

Atm most of my homelab infra ran on #Proxmox at my parent's place. But since I don´t have the space (yet) at home. I temporary ordered a dedicated server at #Hetzner that also runs Proxmox for my homelab needs.

The NAS that I've previously used to store the VM disks on it will now run #Unraid with Proxmox backup Server as a VM as the backup solution for the VM's that are now running on the Hetzner server.

After #Acronis True Image backup price hike I've been testing alternative backup systems. This time tried #Bacula server, running in Docker container in #Unraid server and clients in PCs.
It's very flexible and it took a day to figure out how it works. I got first full backup from a Windows desktop. I like many things like the scheduling system and how the server writes the bulk data into large BLOB files (e.g UrBackup writes zillion files). But there is one showstopper: restoration test fails, giving an SQL error. The Baculum webui has restoration wizard which selects a backup, then I select a file to be restored, but it fails when trying to run it. Hmm...

Yesterday, I experienced the saying that RAID is no backup. A bad memory stick corrupted the filesystem of the BTRFS cache pool of my #Unraid server. The issue was perfectly mirrored to the second drive. Luckily, I was able to mount the drives in read only mode and copy the data off of them. Backup is a few days old.

It's non-ECC memory and about ten years old; not completely unexpected that it fails.

A recent power failure (tripped fuse) convinced me to finally get a #UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). It can supply the home server, modem, router, switch and access point with power for about an hour. Protecting HDDs and services not correctly starting after a power outage were the main reasons. Uninterrupted internet access is a bonus.

I wanted something with a low self consumption and easy connectivity. I got a used #CyberPower PR750ELCD for 40€ and replaced the batteries with third party ones (Kung Long WP7-12(28W)-M/F2; I should have gotten the Kung Long WP1236W instead for a longer runtime). It has a self consumption of 6.1 W and uses USB-HID for communication. Luckily, I still had a USB B to A cable in my box.

It works flawlessly with NUT (https://networkupstools.org/). I use it through the NUT Plugin for #Unraid. I tested the CyberPower PowerPanel Business in a #Docker container, which worked (at least v4.4), but didn't give me any useful additional functionality.

When the power goes out and the UPS takes over, the home server keeps running until the batteries are at 50%. Then it cleanly shuts down to prevent any data loss. The internet connection is kept alive until the batteries are empty.

I don't expect issues with the electrical grid outside the house, but want to reduce my worries and work when something trips a fuse or the ground fault circuit interrupter cuts the power.

Sidenotes
- Why are there few reviews for things that are targeted at organizations? Does everyone do their own tests? (€ https://www.heise.de/select/ct/2022/6/2200610011263054853 was helpful.)
- A home battery doesn't help with a tripped fuse and I believe that, in houses, they are a waste of resources (better on a neighborhood level).
- Identifying the correct replacement battery was hard at first. Then I learned that nearly all of them are produced at the same two factories. Relevant fixed factors are voltage (12 V), physical size (95 mm height) and connectors (F2 aka 6.3 mm FASTON). Capacity (7, 7.2, 9 Ah) is flexible.
- Feel free to add your own USP stories or add useful information/corrections.

Successfully shucked a WD 8 TB external drive that I had and installed in in my home server!

Completely forgot about the 3.3V pin disable issue, and had to take it out and tape over the 3 power pins in order for Unraid to detect it, but it worked. :ablobcatrainbow: I followed this guide: https://imgur.io/a/BFdmB

#NAS #unraid 每次启动都需要输 luks 密钥。想要自动化，但又不想把密钥搞到系统 U 盘里（因为 unraid 支持云备份系统 ）。再搞了块 U 盘放密钥，每次启动时自动 mount & cp & umount，加载完再 rm keyfile。

Hmmm, ich habe hier noch 4 WD-Red Festplatten rumliegen. Irgendwie hätte ich ja Lust mir einen #Fileserver auf Basis von #Unraid zu bauen. Allerdings hält mich der Stromverbrauch davon ab. 😢

So unfortunately because I ordered Enterprise drives, my new #Unraid #NAS build is on hold for a bit. That infamous 3.3v issue with the SATA plugs has struck!

Spent a few hours yesterday trying to figure out why my drives weren’t being recognized or even shown in the BIOS.

Well, yeah, it’s because of that silly SATA spec that basically puts HDDs in a frozen state unless you use very specific server-grade power connectors. Very silly, but ah well.

Gotta wait on some Kapton tape for a fix.
