I figured Warren Ellis’s book, Nina Simone’s Gum, would be comic, or at least ironic. I also vaguely thought its author was a graphic novel guy. It turned out to be one of the sweetest and most earnest, but not mawkish, pieces of art I’ve encountered in some time.
