Finally had a chance to look at my Nikon photos of the aurora borealis on 9/2. I had three shots that are worth sharing. I have lots of ideas on how to improve these ... but more than anything I'm grateful I had the opportunity to see the northern lights in my home state. Let me know what you think.

Before I forget, we stopped by the Escanaba Municipal Marina yesterday morning on our way out of town. It's a great location, very protected, nice docks and just a few minutes walk from the historic downtown. Definitely a good spot for loopers in the area looking to explore a UP city:

In addition to the falls and surrounding hiking areas in the forest, Camp 33, a complex of various service buildings, was set up near the parking lot, a quarter mile from the falls. Camp 33 is named after the original logging camp here before the state park was set up. It includes the only brewery in a state park in Michigan, per the founder's wishes 🍻 (2/2)

We went to Tahquamenon Falls, the second largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. 3,712 gallons of water flow over the falls per second.

The park was formed because the land owners, Jack and Mimi Barrett, loved the falls so much, they wanted everyone to have the opportunity to see them. He worked with Michigan DNR to gift his land specifically for a state park (1/2).

Visited Whitefish Point Lighthouse and the Great Lakes Shipwreck museum this morning. Great exhibits and interesting information regarding Lake Superior Shipwrecks, the Graveyard of the Great Lakes.

More about that later. This was also our goodbye to Lake Superior until our next trip. I'll definitely miss my favorite lake!

Also, I decided to buy a book about agates because they are so cool.

Happy Labor Day from Lake Michigan! What a morning for a dip in the lake!!!

Here are some other photos from the campsite. Great property, but a bit too close to the road, which is fairly busy. The owner, Harold, is super friendly.

Today's plan: go back to two sites we skipped previously, Tahquamenon Falls and Whitefish Point lighthouse (near where the Edmund Fitzgerald sank). We'll then bid goodbye to Lake Superior until next trip.

Decided to try to capture the blue moon tonight from the beach at the campsite. Some of the photos look pretty good, but with either a little too slow of a shutter speed or slightly out of focus. I've added one photo of the view screen on my Nikon.

The stars out here are amazing! The beach is completely dark. I added one astro photography shot from my Android Pixel 6a as well.

Happy Sunday, Fediverse!

Today's plans: start the morning with another swim in Lake Superior, hike to Lake of the Clouds, and then drive down to Escanaba for the evening. We're switching up lakes (back to Lake Michigan) and hoping for an easier time finding a place to sleep as the holiday weekend winds down.

Most interesting fact I learned yesterday: there have been 49 shipwrecks on the Keweena Peninsula 😮🚢

Shooting with the Nikon, I realized early on the lights were too dim for autofocus. Next time I need to make sure my manual focus is set correctly before it's dark 🙄. I think some of the shots were still good, but there was a lot of guessing happening. This was a great reminder to practice more night shooting.

Last night I saw the #northernlights for the first time. I am still ecstatic!

We arrived at the coast of Lake Superior near Porcupine Mountains about 15 min before the lights appeared. This photo was from my phone. It was interesting to see how various phones from my friends and bystanders captured the lights. I also managed to capture a short timelapse I'll try to share in a comment. I've also added a screen capture of our location (1/2).

We were waiting for the sun to go down at Sunset Point at Presque Isle Park in Marquette, Michigan. I was happy to have this lone silhouette in the shot. Unlike the other people there, he was obviously stopping to appreciate the beauty of the moment.
