I went back to 2D & #GodotEngine 3.x, because it's faster and lighter and web-ready.
But then, I pasted the 256x128px format onto the 320x180 prototype. And now I have margins!
It feels somewhat cosy now. Gray stripe is for thermometer legibility.
Action buttons and the dialogue box are a bit further away from borders, which sounds good especially for my new phone which has a notch thing taking a bit of the screen.

It's going well today.
Things to do:
- see if I keep the pixelated characters or I vectorize them and how long it takes to draw them like that
- slap a dialogue system (haven't touched one since #GodotEngine 4.0 early beta)
- do the rest of the game :p
