Stop human caused climate change hereabouts:

Stop cutting trees and destroying forests.

Stop building roads and streets.

Stop building high-rise buildings with glass and steel surfaces.

Stop destroying the natural world!

Concentration on greenhouse gas emissions, to the exclusion of all other climate drivers, masks the full story and facilitates continuing damage to the natural world.

Local government is proposing to build a rail trail project that will remove thousands of trees, ostensibly to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, trading one climate driver for another.

Forests are more than individual trees.

Throwback to a summer in the '80s: 3-story row houses with black tar roofs turning the top floor into a furnace. Don't give that (box)fan a contract; it could not beat the heat! 🌡️🔥

Difference in temp of same pavement in deep shade of a large concrete building, and in full sunlight. For reference, air temp is 92°F (33.3°C).
Shade makes a big deal for livability! Also the concrete is a huge thermal mass, I would not be surprised if it's actively cooling the surrounding area.

Why can be so dangerous and why it’s getting worse

On average, nights are warming faster than days in most of the United States, a national climate assessment found.

By Rachel Ramirez, CNN, Jun 30, 2023

"Summers are getting hotter than ever, shattering all-time high temperature records, straining the energy grid and damaging critical infrastructure.

" also are coming to include another increasingly dangerous element: overnight temperatures that don’t cool down enough to offer sufficient reprieve from stifling heat, particularly for people without access to .

“'Most people don’t realize that hot nighttime temperatures have been outpacing daytime temperature increases across most populated regions worldwide in recent decades,' Columbia University’s Data Science Institute postdoctoral research scientist Kelton Minor told CNN.

“'We think it’s because as the days grow warmer, there is more moisture in the air that traps the heat,' the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health’s executive director, Lisa Patel, told CNN. 'During the day, that moisture reflects the heat, but at night, it traps the heat in.'

nighttime heat is even more common in because of the effect, in which areas are significantly hotter than their surroundings.

"Places with a lot of , , buildings and absorb more of the sun’s heat than areas with ample , and -lined streets. At night, when temperatures are supposed to cool down, the retained heat is released back into the air, said University of Washington climate and health expert Kristie Ebi.

"Areas with a lot of – with grass and trees that reflect sunlight and create shade – are cooler on summer’s hottest days, she said.

“'Many cities put together , but people have to know where they are, how to get to them and what hours they operate,' Ebi told CNN, noting city officials must rethink to consider ."

The urban heat island effect draws moisture upward, creating clouds. A new study shows that it’s up to 6% cloudier over cities than over the surrounding rural areas in the summer. eos.org/articles/cityscapes-cr

@bluegreenandfree @greenone67 I meant measuring from outside, like hood temperature, yes. Thanks to @MyOpinion for posting the article about this. Sorry to reply a few days late, but that was pretty much the kind of info I was looking for. Obviously this depends on exactly how the car is operated and how its cooling systems are designed/working, but the potential reduction in effect is what I was curious about.

Improving Urban Tree Cover to Counteract Heat Islands

We know trees can reduce the urban heat island effect. A Nature Conservancy project is combining data on current tree coverage, heat, health, income, energy sources and more to determine where planting new trees would most help the communities currently most affected by the problem.

Manhattan state of the union 2023-

Upgrade air quality in schools (!!finally!!), new legislation,

Better outdoor air quality by planting trees (?greenwashing? Because this is mostly not . )

Save by every thing that moves. (Yes air quality)
Fully implement local law 97,
everywhere for everyone,
New waterfront protection agency ,
