I may be being naive, but surely there's a way to require the refurbishment of listed buildings which are in such a poor state as part of the planning permission for new developments on neighbouring plots. This would be to the benefit of everyone concerned.

I love it when old street furinture is left in place when streets get renovated. This great example is from Oswald Street in central Glasgow. I really want to know what it used to be for as the instructions on it are very precise, but are now rather cryptic given how this area has changed over the years.

I feel Glasgow City Council has neglected this part of the city centre for way too long and that, regardless of who is running it, should be doing a lot more to bring such buildings back into use. And by this, I don't mean knocking them down and replacing them with generic-looking new buildings, but actually properly bringing the back into use.

This is one of the things which annoys me quite so much about the destruction of Glasgow's old buildings by developers who dismiss them as being of no importance simply because they are not a MacKintosh or a Greek Thomson.

When we lose old buildings, we lose not just a work of art and an element of our collective history, we also lose part of the connection between the people and their city, and once lost this connection can be very difficult to get back.

Standing, heads bowed and arms crossed, this pair of Atlantes have been stoically holding up the building at 146 Argyle Street in Glasgow since 1903, but in all that time they've worked their way into the hearts of many of the city's residents, especially its younger ones.

Ghost tenement on Tollcross Road in Glasgow.

I remember this being a common sight across Glasgow in the 1970s and 80s when many tenements were being demolished. The resulting orphaned gable ends were usually cleaned up and sealed, and it's unusual to see one left quite so exposed to this day.

Popped along to the Mayfield Park in Manchester yesterday afternoon. What a fantastic transformation of urban wasteland into a beautiful park for public use. The landscaping is a real mix of planting with a lot of turfed land for lounging about on. I’ve also got some great ideas for plants. I’d never seen American Angelica before so that’s going into next years garden.

Glasgow tenements were originally built in large, continuous blocks, but over time many have been knocked down, leaving exposed gable ends and sometimes even individual closes standing as lone survivors of what was once there.

It's a depressing to see yet another bit of Glasgow's architectural heritage being torn down.

This c-listed art deco building was deemed beyond repair and is being demolished to be replaced by flats. The only redeeming feature is that at least they will be social housing rather than private flats.

Wellpark Institute, 120 Sydney Street, Calton, Glasgow.

This grand Italianate building was built in 1867 as a Free Church school. When constructed, it would have been surrounded by the community it served, but it now stands isolated amongst industrial sites and wasteland.

Glasgow's traditional sandstone buildings before (right) and after (left) being cleaned to remove decades of soot and grime that coated almost every building in the city until the start of a cleaning programme in the 1980s and 1990s.

It is this cleaning programme that allows us now to see and appreciate the true beauty of the many amazing buildings Glasgow has to offer.
