I had a blast presenting our sea today at the symposium! I even wore a costume, brought a live urchin for show & tell, and made themed snacks!

They’re tiny but deadly - a glimpse into the ciliate culture that’s responsible for killing sea urchins in the Caribbean (each ciliate is about 1/20th of a millimeter long)

Hoping to see some new folks exploring Mastodon so figured it’s time for another - I’m Mya, a professor at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science. Our lab studies (bacteria, viruses, protists) in the oceans and other environments and also works on egg identification. I also post about my cute dog and cat a lot!

Today’s was to ‘mend something that is broken’.
Everytime I did anything other than gently breathe close to the
I created of an , its cap would fall off. And subsequently it has been balancing there, until I’d do it again, repeatedly. I have been meaning to fix it securely for ages, you know how it is. So today was the day! #365 #175 Thank you

Eucidaris tribuloides, the slate pencil urchin from the Caribbean and the tropical Atlantic, is sometimes mistraded as an algivore. Unfortunately, it happens instead to be a specialised, nocturnal grazer of marine sponges. A paper in 2003 found no other food sources in the gut contents of E. tribuloides, than demosponges such as Haliclona. Unless spongal growth on the 'live rock' is rife, these echinoids can only be expected to wither and die.
