• character limits are generally sufficient
• they obfuscate the link (which the security- & privacy-conscious will avoid)
• they add an unnecessary 3rd-party point of failure
• that 3rd party can track/spy on traffic
• some, like those ending in .ly, are dependent on countries (e.g. Libya) with regimes with questionable political motives for tracking/filtering traffic

there are reserved #domains and #ipRanges for just this!
for #url: the top-level-domains
.test, .example, .invalid and .localhost and the domain example.com are reserved
for ip-adresses the blocks 192.0.2.0/24, 198.51.100.0/24 and 203.0.113.0/24 are reserved
they are always safe to use in #documentation

Twitter blocking of Mastodon is specifically targeted.
I seems like #musk blocks #mastodon links as spam for specific Twitter #users.
I get #blocked when I click on any Mastodon link whilst in #twitter.
I know of another user that has no blocking using THE SAME links to Mastodon.
Unsafe blocking of #URLs on Twitter is therefore proven to be a #boycott, nothing to do with any internet protocol !
