Here's what I think is an important paragraph of the article:
"That the gunman has been identified as an Asian person doesnβt exclude the possibility of hate, misogyny, or ethnic discrimination as a motive. Asian American leaders have also expressed concern that the shooting itself could encourage or fuel other acts of violence against the community in the following weeks."

I don't recall if it was here or elsewhere that I heard about The Yappie (an independent source of news for #AAPI folks), but their coverage of the Monterey Park shooting is pretty comprehensive. 1/

Rubio said further that every person in the state legislature called to offer their support.
I hope that the support promised by every member of the California legislature includes additional funding for the mental health services offered in the Monterey Park school district.

I really appreciate the words from Senator Susan Rubio who asked for people to offer support to the teachers who are going to be the ones who have to deal with the questions, concerns, fears, and worry of the children of the victims and the whole community.

I don't think I know enough about the Chinese community in Los Angeles to have a more nuanced take on this. I am just mostly sad because 10 people who were celebrating the Lunar New Year are now dead for no apparent reason. May they rest well, may their families know peace, and may they receive the justice they deserve.

I'm checking to see if any of my parents' or sister's friends may be connected to the victims and survivors. I would be surprised if they did, however, because for the most part, our Filipino family was pretty insular when it came to who we hung out with in L.A. because we lived in Orange County and my dad's college buddies mostly lived around the City of Industry, in far west L.A.

CBC stated that the preliminary suspect was being described as an Asian male. They also say that after killing 10 people, a different ballroom in a nearby club was also breached by an "Asian male" wielding a gun. In that case, people in the club had been able to wrestle the gun away from him before he fled. Investigation is still too fresh to have concrete details.
