Appreciation post for the fun illustrations in the #usborne computer books.

Since the 1980s, Usborne has been releasing great books for learning about computers and programming. Vibrant and fun, with big letters for the young and old, the company has put a whole bunch of them online for free as PDFs. They may not be as culturally relevant, but their ability to teach remains neon bright.

I recommending "Write Your Own Adventure Programs" for the curious, it's fun simply to read!

I learned to code using these books using my Acorn Electron, in particular "Write Your Own Adventure Programs For Your Microcomputer". I retyped out the code again with my son on a BBC Micro emulator. It wouldn't pass modern coding standards, but was good fun.

Custard tart, tea and a look ahead to the 20th century from 1979 to read. Depressing is how much climate change has radically altered things since these predictions. @freezr Still, back then I didn't know a thing about Microcomputers so I couldn't tell which one was the best choice .. but one thing I knew for sure: I was mesmerized by the #ZXSpectrum form factor!

I even went as far as to ask my mom to buy me as much as three #Usborne computer game books (Spy Games, Creepy Games and Weird Games) so I could get acquainted with the system before I could actually get my hands on it .. which, now you know, never happened ... but she did buy those books for me 😊

eventually got round to setting up the spare room and unpacking all theboxes for it. which means I got to unpack this little lot of #80s #usborne computer books and eventually get them onto a shelf.

I've got most of the ones I want, but there are one or two I'm still to pick up but lately they have been listed for stupid prices on sites. still, not in a hurry, so I'll just keep my eyues peeled for bargains to add to the collection
