This is from my Mastodon boyfriend @Robotron. My copy of this looked clean but had so much surface noise it wasn’t much fun to listen to. I tried to relplace it via Discogs and it didn’t go well. So Robotron hooked me up. Sounds great. Side 1 is a perfect album side of rock ‘n’ roll music.

Seems like a good “Independence Day” record. Got this as a gift for Red—it’s a favorite for her. My favorite hip hop music tends to be rap groups. De La Soul, Tribe, Beasties, PE, Blackalicious, RtJ… so this slots in perfectly. Absolute 🔥

A small vinyl shop a few towns away had a 1 year anniversary celebration yesterday so I picked a few new records. a bit more than I usually pay for a used single disc but the promised “Mint” sticker was no joke. Might as well opened this myself. What a fun record. Been listening to a bunch of Clash again so I’m appreciating this more than I did at the time.

Somewhere along the line I lost my teenage copies of whatever The Clash albums I owned, but I had never owned this. I was probably influenced by the prevailing opinion of Clash fans this wasn’t that great, and I don’t think I’d listened to it seriously in its entirety. So it’s been a whale for me for a few years.

Pat Benatar - Precious Time.

About 8 years ago I discovered you could get Pat Benatar albums in pristine condition for <$10. It’s odd to me that she doesn’t have the same nostalgic footprint as other 80s acts. I mean, she was huge for a while, right? I’ve always had a soft spot for her and her band even when I was a snotty post punk kid. Even the dumb songs are terrific.

Other than the bargain price I got it for, the reason I grabbed this is one of the members, Kathy McCarty, made an album called Dead Dog’s Eyeball that I absolutely loved in the 90s.

This record has some wild stylistic swings on it. I’ll be honest, there’s a couple songs that are really not my thing. But it does close with an Allen Toussaint song, “Going Down Slowly” that is 7 minutes of pure badass. & they sing the hell out of it.

Eddy Grant - Going for Broke

Not knowing anything outside ’Electric Avenue’ (still a banger track) I really hoped I’d find a forgotten gem here. Alas, not a good album. Despite his terrific voice, it suffers from being one dude in a studio in the 80s. None of the songs are strong enough to overcome the production. It’s like demos for a much better recorded with a full band.
