I have *still* seen complaints from journos on Twitter claiming they are only “liking” something so that it is bookmarked in some way… meanwhile over here on Mastodon, there are actual bookmarks. No personal-jeopardy of ‘liking’ something if you don’t actually like it.

Can we put the idea that #proprietary software is more #UserFriendly than #FreeSoftware to rest? Zoom fucks with my window manager. Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft all produce #Spyware. Adobe extorts artists for access to their art. #DRM prohibits me from reading ebooks on my devices without breaking someone's ToS. Discord is a resource hog even though it's mostly just a fancy irc service.

Proprietary software encourages a defensive atitude that makes them hostile towards us.

Computers have spoiled people. In particular, autofill.

Library management is having a big debate right now, regarding usernames. The primary complaint is that we have lots of people with the same first names, and autofill often fills in the wrong thing.

"So pay attention when you type, and don't rely on autofill". I say.

Trust me, how I said it in my head was way worse.

With the looks I got, you'd think I'd just strangled a puppy in the meeting.

@sloanlance @goatrodeo @tekbog No. There was a #webcomic, #UserFriendly, about an IT team. One of the team members was Pitr Dubovich, a #Linux guru. He created "vigor", combination of #vi and #Clippy.

Eventually someone created #vigor in real life, and that's how we have it now.
