I am SO excited for this #SciArt #coral seminar tomorrow hosted by #USFCMS. Open to the public so if you’re in the #TampaBay area, please join us! Otherwise, check out Beatriz Chachamovits’ gorgeous work online: https://www.beatrizchachamovits.com/

Water temps were unbelievably hot, but we had a great day in the field today sampling for our #seagrass #virus #research - Im so lucky to work with this incredible group of #USFCMS and #FWC scientists! #science #florida #virology #ocean #snorkel

I’m still in denial over the fact that it’s August but it’s really nice to start having the lab members all back in one place (yay for a birthday lunch today) and I am SO proud of our summer interns (3 undergrads and 1 high school student) who made incredible progress over the past few months #science #USFCMS #research #proudPI

They’re tiny but deadly - a glimpse into the ciliate culture that’s responsible for killing sea urchins in the Caribbean (each ciliate is about 1/20th of a millimeter long) #USFCMS #urchin #marine #microscopy #science #microbiology #protist #ocean #oceanography

Hoping to see some new #science folks exploring Mastodon so figured it’s time for another #introduction - I’m Mya, a professor at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science. Our lab studies #microbes (bacteria, viruses, protists) in the oceans and other environments and also works on #fish egg identification. I also post about my cute dog and cat a lot! #USFCMS #ocean #marine #oceanography #microbiology #virology #research #seagrass #urchin #academia

Yesterday at the #USFCMS Spring Fling, graduate student Hallie Repeta received the Vembu Subramanian MSAC Award! This award is given to a student who exhibits qualities of charity, community spirit, and positivity. Hallie is a wonderful recipient (as are all of the precious awardees pictured here with the Dean). Not a day goes by when I don’t miss Vembu, but he would love seeing all the good he’s still inspiring in our community.
So proud of #USFCMS graduate student Christina Chadwick, who did her Master’s degree with me and Katherine Hubbard looking at Pseudonitzchia (#phytoplankton #diatom) diversity, toxin levels, and environmental parameters in the Gulf of Maine - her research will help in understanding the drivers of these harmful algae blooms. Christina is highlighted among this weekend’s #USF graduates - https://www.usf.edu/news/boundless-bulls/students/grad-series-spring-2023.aspx #graduation #science #ocean

It’s #WorldSeagrassDay so I wanted to share a bit about our newly #NSFfunded project to identify #viruses infecting #seagrasses and study their transmission mechanisms and ecological impacts. This pic is from the #StPetersburgScienceFestival where we did an #outreach event to teach the public about the importance of #seagrass ecosystems #USFCMS #ocean
