A simple litmus test for self-described utilitarians: would you trade places with someone much worse off if it increased the net supply of human happiness?

Det enklaste sättet att sätta slut på allt lidande vore att utplåna allt liv.

Jag tvivlar på att Gautama eller Jeremy visste att det skulle bli en möjlighet.

Peter Singer is not an intellectual, and doesn't really care about the well being of humans nor other species. He's not a good example for morality at all.

“killing a disabled infant is not morally equivalent to killing a person. Very often it is not wrong at all.” - Peter Singer

What's the definition of smugness? Pouring yourself a drink & putting your feet up while a friend opts to do the running event (street-O), despite the rain, you both entered. Question is, will his satisfaction in completing it outweigh my pleasure at being warm and dry? Where's John Stuart Mill when we need him?

"“civilization” refers to the social and material cultures that issue from a specific socio-environmental system, which in human animals is legitimated by a perspective that sees the world as existing for a utilitarian purpose." Advocates for justify ANY atrocity given an arbitrary justification.

is how society should be structure; not because of a moral imperative, but because of the argument of societal efficiency.

A very good Radio 4 Boring Talk about Jeremy Bentham’s “Auto-Icon” by its (his) curator, in which you will discover that everything you thought you knew about it was wrong: bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001j5j6

@cshentrup Please explain what you mean by "selfish gene utility". I am familiar with the notion of selfish genes from evolutionary biology, but what exactly do you mean by "selfisch gene utility"? What is it and what does one have to do to follow that principle?

Elon Musk’s Appetite for Destruction
A wave of lawsuits argue that Tesla’s self-driving software is dangerously overhyped.

What can its blind spots teach us about the company’s erratic C.E.O.?

"“My guess as to when we would think it is safe for somebody to essentially fall asleep and wake up at their destination: probably toward the end of next year,” Musk said in 2019. “I would say I am certain of that. That is not a question mark.”"

I wake, exhausted from all the end of year work, and quietly read a brilliant critique of long-termism by Emile P Torres.

Against longtermism
It started as a fringe philosophical theory about humanity’s future. It’s now richly funded and increasingly dangerous
