In extreme climate, utility shutoffs must stop. #utilityjustice #NoShutoffs https://biologicaldiversity.org/w/news/press-releases/to-address-deadly-heat-policymakers-must-ban-utility-shutoffs-ramp-up-solar-phase-out-fossil-fuels-2023-07-28/
#Utilities are cutting people off from life-saving services at alarming rates. 1.5M #shutoffs in 30 states & DC just last year. Itβs time Congress recognize that access to energy is a #HumanRight and ban shutoffs. #UtilityJustice

Criminals. "At the end of Dec 2021, @PGE4Me@twitter.com average residential bills were around $202. By about mid-2022, PG&Eβs average residential bills had risen to the amount of $233.67. That represented an increase of 15.6% over a 6-month period." #UtilityJustice https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/12/19/pge-wildfire-catastrophe-proposal-higher-monthly-bill-electric-gas/?utm_campaign=socialflow&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social&utm_content=tw-EastBayTimes
The U.S. has no uniform protections against #utility #shutoffs. Out of curiosity i asked a French colleague how it works there. In #France, the national electricity provider has banned ALL shutoffs for any reason.
People who aren't paying their bill on time are limited to maximum 1kVA (not quite 1kW) of power, for "minimum service" including lighting, refrigeration, and charging electronic devices.
We can have a better utility system than what the U.S. offers today. #UtilityJustice

Most of my work time is spent thinking about #utilities and #UtilityJustice. Today the Energy Equity Project at the University of Michigan breaks down common arguments against sensible action, and asks us to build another world, one without shutoffs (and references my argument about banning them without incremental data collection steps)! https://energyequityproject.com/2022/11/14/why-do-we-still-have-energy-shutoffs-another-world-is-possible/
