We're done with the second and final day of "parent orientation" at #UVa and have collected our son, to keep him for a few more weeks until classes start. Even though we live nearby, 1st-year students are required to live in dorms.
Much of the orientation was about the importance of letting go. Older students in a roundtable discussion were asked how often they wanted parents to contact them: "Every couple of weeks, maybe", or "Once a month". Dunno if I'm up to that!

Today my wife and I spent the first of two days of "parent orientation" alongside his student orientation session. We heard interesting talks about the changes going on in young adult brains, and how best to help our son during this new phase of his life.
We weren't sure about signing up for the orientation. I've worked at UVa for 40 years, so I don't need a tour of the grounds. I'm glad we did it, though. I learned a lot.
