@WIExaminer @Hredman There’s money but the #wisgop does not want the #UWSystem to have it. “…Gov. Tony Evers wanted to use part of the state’s $7 billion surplus to provide hundreds of millions of dollars in additional funding for the system. Instead, in the budget Evers eventually signed into law, Republican lawmakers cut $32 million from the UW System budget. The state still has a $4 billion surplus and an additional $1.8 billion in its “rainy day fund.”
Periodic reminder that we still have not restored the $250 million the GOP cut from the #UWSystem budget under Scott Walker, even as it gave the #Bucks $250 million for the UW Budget Cut Arena.
Now, Robin Vos does his regular bit about Evers (newsflash: this is how budgeting & politics works. Both parties propose stuff. It's not "dropping a bomb") & the state's leading newspaper again stenographizes him in a block quote & is complicit in fanning this nonsense narrative.
I actually think people in Wisconsin don’t realize this, & the state media rarely covers it. So the public thinks it’s perfectly reasonable for the state to have complete regulatory control over the #UWSystem & #UWMadison, especially older voters who remember the pre-1980s model. But I suspect the politics would be very different if we framed every discussion about relations b/w the two ends of State Street around the idea that 85% of university funding is <not> from the state government.
Vos & the Fidesz-on-Mendota party are now going to weaponize this during budget negotiations & use it to cut funding for UW &/or impose absurd new reporting & training requirements on faculty & students. All because the administration again made the awful mistake of agreeing to let a group of politically-motivated non-survey research specialists impose a badly-designed survey designed to reach predetermined conclusions on the #UWSystem. Literally, everyone could have predicted all of this.
Truly, no one could possibly have predicted.
Once again, Robin #Vos is lying about things that aren't actually happening on UW campuses. And once again, this is exactly why #UWSystem officials should have refused to participate in this poorly designed, politically-motivated survey that can tell you <exactly nothing> about the scope and scale of "#freespeech” concerns on college campuses, in Wisconsin or anywhere else: https://mastodon.social/@mcopelov/109793079202249389
