Inside #NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center are five #cranes, two of which are rated for 325 tons intended to help assemble the #Space Shuttle.
Originally the V in #VAB stood for “Vertical” because that was where the Saturn V was stacked vertically before rolling out to LC-39, but this didn’t apply as well to the #SpaceShuttle, which was side-mounted, so the V was reassigned.
Now the VAB will be used for the stacking of SLS #rockets.

After #NASA ended the #SpaceShuttle Program, the three #Orbiters, #Discovery, Endeavour, and #Atlantis, were all lent out to #museums for public viewing. This required the #spacecraft to be decontaminated from toxic propellants, and have their #SSME / RS-25D #rocket #engines removed for use in the #SpaceLaunchSystem and replaced by replicas.
This retrofitting required some awkward Orbiter dancing as #KSC only had 3 Orbiter Processing Facilities, and had already rented one out. So one Orbiter remained in the #VAB while another was processed.

The new Orion integration pathway allows the Orion #spacecraft to be assembled, stacked on the #EuropeanServiceModule, and readied for #flight atop an #SLS #rocket.
The #LaunchAbortSystem integrated in a separate facility since the #LAS contains solid fueled rockets already. The stack is then integrated on top of SLS inside the Vehicle Assembly Building #VAB and then rolled out to #LC39B on the #Crawler-Transporter for #launch.
The O&C building, VAB, Crawler-Transporter, and LC-29B #infrastructure all have #Apollo-era heritage.

This view taken from a higher level in the #VAB looks over #Atlantis’ aft, clearly showing where the 3 #SSME engines were removed, as well as silver foil over where the #OMS pods attach.
It’s also possible to see the protective braces on the #payloadbay doors.

#SpaceShuttle #Orbiter #Atlantis is backed into the tall #VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building). It will wait there, missing its #RCS (#ReactionControlSystem) and #OMS (#OrbitalManeuveringSystem)
which are being decontaminated at #WhiteSands #Space Harbor from the toxic #MMH monomethylhydrazine /N2O4 that had filled its tanks for so long.

#SpaceShuttle #Orbiter #Atlantis is moved from one of the #Orbiter Processing Facilities #OPF to the Vehicle Assembly Building #VAB at #KSC to make way for #Endeavour to be fitted with mock-up Space Shuttle Main Engines #SSMEs and decontaminated Orbital Maneuvering System pods and forward Reaction Control System pod.
These systems have also been removed from Atlantis. The Space Shuttle Main Engines will be modified for use on the Space Launch System/ #SLS / #Artemis missions. The #OMS and #RCS pods were filled with toxic propellants and required decontamination at #WhiteSands Space Harbor.

While #NASA's :nasa: #SpaceShuttle #Endeavour was returning after its mission carry the #AMS02 instrument that is being used to look for evidence of #darkmatter, #Atlantis was being readied to carry the a load of supplies to the #ISS /International Space Station.
Atlantis and its stack were rolled out of the #VAB /Vehicle Assembly Building’s doors, the largest in the world, and to LC-39A on the #crawlertransporter, carrying the #ShuttleStack and making an incredible average speed of 1 mile per hour.

Die #Abkürzung des Gesetzes, #VAB, hat zu einem neuen #Verb geführt: "Der Kleine rotzt schon wieder rum, muss wohl morgen vabben." Wenn man von #Zuhause arbeitet und dabei Kind pflegt, heißt das dann "vobben" (vabben+#Job).
