The project calls for more than 100 new housing units

"The Portland Planning Board has approved plans to convert a vacant 10-story office building in the downtown area into housing.

"The plans from Ocean Gate LLC call for turning the building at 511 Congress St. into 107 housing units, including 27 affordable units. Most of the apartments would be on floors two through seven.

"The building's total interior floor area is 139,837 square feet and an enclosed interior exit stairway will be added.

"Construction is expected to start on Jan 1, 2024, and take about 18 months with completion expected summer of 2025."
