Another fantastic story. About whaling by multiple First Nations on Vancouver Island. And if you've ever been to the American Natural History Museum, you might have seen the “Whalers Washing House" which was a sacred shrine with dozens of tall human forms made of wood (Picture in the article). They were taken from the Mowachaht/Muchahlaht in Yuquot in 1904.

Here's hoping one day they are returned.

Great story and history here as the First Nation in Yuquot, the home and nation of Maquinna who first met Spanish colonizers in the 1700s on the West Coast of Canada. It includes stained glass windows donated by the Government of Spain in the 1950s when this structure was built.

"It's a striking combination of elements, in a building that still wears the mark of a Euro-centric worldview. At the church’s entrance are two stained glass windows that were donated by Spain in the 1950s, depicting Europeans in the centre as the local First Nations are in the darkened periphery.

“These windows are now jarring remnants from a colonial past,” explained the First Nation on its website. “One window shows representatives of Britain and Spain, Quadra and Vancouver, conferring about ‘sovereignty’ over Nootka Sound in 1791.””

Young salmon and trout die in the Cowichan River due to extreme heat and low water levels causing algal blooms. And in a few weeks they might have to start trucking salmon up river (again) from the estuary because the water levels are so low.

Most patients are over 75 years old.

Public Health Officials would really like you to know this I'm sure.

They are so so afraid of it sounding all bad & scary & make them look bad.

It might even make it look like they HAVEN'T BEEN DOING THEIR DAMN JOBS

Have I ever told you one of my favourite political-actions is to file Freedom of Information/Access To Information requests and then riff on the results? It's good times.

I just got notification that my most recent FOI will be proceeding. It was hung up as the Office determined whether I was worthy of having the fees (~$100) waved. It looks like they might wave them. I'll know shortly and should have a response to my request, or more likely, a request to extend their search time, in the next 30 days.

There’s Great Blue Herons and then there’s a greatly blue heron under a blue-lit bridge.

And if I can't get either, I really try

I'll live to see another day.”

Went out for a walk up Christmas Hill today and spotted a lot of small grasshopper-type things that clicked when they flew - not sure what variety they are (they're about 5mm wide and 3 cm long) but there were lots of them flitting around!

Also spotted an Anna's Hummingbird! I got lots of blurry pics but I did get one sharp picture at least :)

Fully 21st C moment:

Soaking my arthritic ankle on the couch, listening to the now-retro Revolutionary Tea Party on vinyl, watching streamers on YouTube on the phone because I can use the Vinegar app to strip out the ads.

Interrupted by texts from my sister-in-law on food allergies and my adult children's fibromyalgia because they're about to visit. So I check the wastewater surveillance viral load summary for at bccdc.shinyapps.io/respiratory as we consider masking for relatives who should be in our bubble. Then procrastinate harvesting fodder for the chickens for a second while checking social media for the latest war, climate disaster, and fascist depredations, looking for patterns and hope.

So now time to pop the bread in the oven and head out and hay.

"You who see for us a future

Mek wi drink tea
Let's talk
Mek wi analyze
Mek wi strategize
Mek wi work together"

Go and see Poems for God at the Victoria Fringe Festival. And be game.

Are there Fringe Festival hashtags? Is anyone on Mastodon doing the Victoria Fringe?

Stuck on highway 4 for two hours after missing the morning opening (barely... there are about twenty cars in front of us..)

At least we have a nice view of Cameron Lake, my feet are in the water, and we have snacks.

Boarding my flight for leg 1 of 2 on the trip home. It’s always a sad feeling leaving an area you have fallen in love with.

✅ See some sockeye salmon jump during the salmon run.

I thought we would be too early, but we saw a few in the river and past the waterfall!! It was a real cool experience at Stamp River, where there is also a fish ladder with cameras!
