Craig Harbison,'s Jan Van Eyck: The Play of Realism (1999) is an excellent bit of social contextualisation & #arthistory. In the wake of the massive Van Eyck show (& heavyweight catalogue) last year Harbison's admirably focussed book explores six extant #VanEyck depictions of the Virgin & Child, to examine patronage, the artist's use of symbols & his social position. This is well balanced, social history of art at its best. Great stuff

Thread 1. I never truly appreciated art or artists. I never fully appreciated the historical significance of portrait painting either, until I saw this one. When I traveled to London I made a point to stop at the National Gallery and look at it in person. Not even 5 years ago I would have walked right by if I even set foot in there. I went to the art museum this week and now I have even MORE sewing projects I want to do 🫣 Renaissance isn't even my favorite period but those Annunciation paintings make me want to dress as both Gabriel (with the rainbow wings) and the Madonna (I am not even Catholic)?
