Unlike most of town, this place rests perpetually dim under a tall elder canopy of Douglas-firs. But Varied Thrushes don't mind the chilly weather this spring and are in full song - vreeee? Vreeeeee! At least four, some seemingly very close, but such a ventriloquistic sound that I never spot one. And once, from the fern-thick hillside above, a #PacificWren unlooses its tumbling rush of music.

A Varied Thrush! I occasionally see them in Stanley Park, but never in West End streets. Apparently they're pretty good with cold so they tend to winter further inland and in higher elevations, but this cold snap has pushed them out into developed areas. A lot of birders on FB are reporting a veritable variedthrushathon

The varied thrush has returned to the backyard. Sorry for poor quality. Purchased a DSLR camera two years ago for just such opportunities but it proved to be a hassle trying to get camera ready before the subject disappeared. And now with a young dog an impossibility.
