I rebuilt my #varnish server tonight using an Ansible playbook I'm writing on an updated Debian 12 Triton image. While working on it, I noticed the log was going crazy. I checked the connections (netstat -nat | wc -l) and found there were >4300 open at that moment. This was just someone with a modest follower count boosting one of my posts.

Before Varnish, this would have taken my system down for 20 minutes or so. I'm curious how far the new service can go. /1

A new #FOSS module for #VarnishCache has become usable: #VMOD zipflow lets you generate ZIP files on the fly.

Switching from Apache to Varnish has definitely made a big difference in performance for my Serendipitous server. Mastodon is pretty noisy and a simple thing like changing my profile summary (which generates 700+ external connections pretty much instantly) was enough to overwhelm the Apache reverse proxy server. Varnish (using Hitch for TLS) handles it with aplomb.

After switching from the free #Varnish #Cache to the licensed Varnish Enterprise version, the service(s) failed to start with an error (Cannot create working directory).
This has to do with the order of package removing/purging and installing the varnish-plus package. 🐰

It is such a buzz when the combination of a slightly batty potter and a picky carpenter works so goooood!

Problem: Need to varnish both sides at the same time, so they won't warp. #Pottery folk collect the weirdest things - like these bits of packaging. And who doesn't have a few pins laying around for sewing?

Customer picked up the table so I didn't get any beauty shots. I kinda hate working with stain in general, and especially stain that contains plastic, so after the mate to this table is made I'll probably never touch the stuff again. Overall pleased with the outcome, and glad I experimented with the legs how I did. They're 3 3/4 boards where the middle had a gap cut before laminating so that it created a through-tenon with no chopping.
