@DigiVictorian this is marvellous! Just told it to a room of people who were delighted! Also, with my classics hat on, Varro is v interested in the whole “things called after founders” wordplay vibe around @antiquidons

@chjones yes! Varro is the ultimate example of the polymath—and not only a theoretician and public intellectual (if we’re comfortable with retrojecting that terminology) but someone who got involved in politics amidst huge state and military turmoil, and survived…he’s fascinating. This might be a statue of him (from Cassino museum, which I recommend. He had property near there). @antiquidons

Will I ever have said all I can think of about Varro? Nope! But after my many meanderings, it’s giving me goosebumps that Varro’s Guide to being Roman hit the shelves 🤩 uwpress.wisc.edu/books/5695.htm…

I ought to do again having moved “instance”: much of my time/energy revolves around being Dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences, which I reflect using . & research is squeezed *a lot*, but still circles the Roman Republican polymath M. Terentius Varro, see . I’m thinking more again about enviro-landscape tropes in (Roman) antiquity, & their sensory aspects, see (when I start that thread). So and are also my people.
