The errata for 8th Army: Operation Crusader #boardgame published by GDW included instructions for “play by phone”.
Due to the double blind nature of the game there were two identical maps and playaids. Yet only one set of counters. So it was possible yet would have been time consuming and lots of work for the players. Hooray for such tech as #VassalEngine

Does anybody out there know how to implement spawning of pieces at a random location on a map in #vassalengine, and could point me to an example, or outline a rough approach?

If folks are interested in checking out the Desert Victory game included in the mag there is a Vassal module (on the #VassalEngine site) and the rules pdf is on #bgg

A holy grail for me, as a historical #boardgame player, is playing such a game on my iPad. Some wargames are on BGA but they are few. I know I can use Vassal on a Surface Tablet but the touch interface isn’t that good. I’ve tried, even with a pen. #VassalEngine 4 will come eventually. Hopefully.
Playingcards.io was tried but doesn’t support play area panning and zooming. I looked at some RPG VTTs but they fell short in supporting the type of board game components I needed.

Well, mt Vassal Engine module of The Lost Expedition is as finished as it will be for now.
It's not the 100% best but playable with all the expansions available.
Since I created it for myself without official approval, I can't even share with someone to beta test.

Flying Pig & Tiny Battles Publishing has been a bit hit or miss for me tbh. So I went another route and got the PnP from #WargameVault. A much cheaper option for a curiosity purchase. No shipping charge too. There are only 100 counters so I might throw together a #VassalEngine module instead of printing actual components.

A couple of years ago I created a #VassalEngine module for #TheLostExpedition #boardgame with all the expansions.
I was looking at it again the other day and realized how "awkward" it felt.
So I'm in the process of doing a complete revamp of the module to make incorporating the various expansions easier.

Along with #boardgames with cards & cubes etc I do enjoy #hexandcounter #wargames too. They were my first cardboard crush. I am rather excited about the upcoming Desert Victory: North Africa 1940-42 in C3i mag 36. So much so that I playtested the game & created the #VassalEngine module. The supply, disruption mechanics etc give a nice flavour of the Western Desert campaign. Brigade/division level means it plays fast too. Should be out in December-ish.

@BoardGameBloke I have created 18 #VassalEngine modules for myself so I can play some of the games I own without setting up a table. They are all modules of games not found on the Vassal website.
I also tried my hand at creating on #TTS with only one module.
I'm not real good at either #VassalEngine or $TTS but enjoy figuring them out.

A side activity yet still related to #boardgames is the creation of modules for #TabletopSimulator (aka TTS) or for the #VassalEngine. These could be for playtest or production #boardgame designs.

My wife and I just tried #vassalengine to play Elder Sign together online. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it's actually a pretty decent piece of Java software. Took us a bit to figure it out, but once we found the quickstart guide (duh) we had our game started in just a few minutes. A little fiddling around with the interface and we were playing one of our favorite board games together, while apart. Since we can't see each other in person much these days, this was really nice to have.
