: "As countries in the Global South have long been plundered for labor and precious natural resources, today’s digital economy is extracting data from its citizens. And as the new dirty jobs of the digital economy are outsourced to the Global South—for instance, content moderators and data labelers in Kenya and the Philippines scouring the dregs of social media to protect the public from extreme and graphic material—we are witnessing the construction of a new age of digital sweatshops, where the most dangerous work is offshored to be performed by workers with the fewest protections.

The tech industry likes to present itself as presiding over a new industrial revolution that will change the world forever. It’s a more apt comparison than they might realize. As Dr. Onoho’Omhen Ebhohimhen of the Nigeria Labour Congress explained to us, noting that the effects of the digital economy, such as algorithmic management of workers, “is akin to reproducing the first Industrial Revolution, where workers were bonded and locked up, worked for 20 hours or more in a day, and had no right to a family life.”

Yet, it doesn’t have to be this way. Digital innovation can disrupt economies in favor of collaborative, solidarity-based forms of decent and quality work, where all can flourish. So, how might we democratize the digital economy so workers have agency and are able to shape the future alongside the technologists and venture capitalists of Silicon Valley?"

Eventually, AI valuations should fall below typical tech valuations, because AI is less scalable than traditional tech. The reason there's a multitrillion dollar ecosystem funding tech companies and not construction companies is that technology scales infinitely. Write once copy infinitely; there's zero marginal cost to adding users.

Building an AI business is still more capital-efficient than building a construction startup, but it's not as good as writing a piece of software and selling it on the internet.

Two things are happening here that are huge portents for the future: 1) investors are vastly more sensitive to monetization because money isn't free anymore (ZIRP); 2) AI/LLM priced like it was the next coming of crypto, but in reality it's just a new technology.

That second point really matters. Crypto was 80% pyramid scheme and 20% technology, which meant that _nearly every early adopter got rich very quickly_. And not fake-rich; people were buying $50mm homes. This led to an explosion of "respectable" crypto startups that weren't pyramid schemes (some were genuinely cool) to attract legitimate investors, but they were all drifting behind the valuation and growth expectations of the pyramid schemes. The market got grossly distorted.

AI won't work like that; there's no get-rich-quick element here, and the greater fool theory doesn't work very well without retail investors.

Oh ffs, why do I even look into these things? I think I’m being harsh and then it’s always worse than I thought:

FairPhone has taken venture capital.

fairphone.com/wp-content/uploa

They’ve been invested in by, among others, Invest-NL (currently three exits, all IPOs¹) and Quadia (also three exits, all acquisitions²).

I would just like it if for once – fucking once – it wasn’t just about making money.

*sigh*

I'm not a fan of vulture capital pretending to embrace co-operative principles.

Given the option, I would choose to shop at an independent whole owned shop or a worker owned cooperative over some bros brick & mortar playground any day:

I won't be spending money at Teamshares companies because their goal of "80% employee ownership within 20 years" seems ridiculous to me when the average time to exit is less than half of that.

@adarsh @Zee This made me think about the problem with current VC models. Most software that provides value to its users (ie they’re willing to pay for it) and has an non exploitive product and business model requires some initial development to create the MVP. In other words, they need some money to cover development before they can bootstrap themselves. At the moment we’re locked into VC funding being the main source of that money.

@autiomaa Correction: Google never was a librarian. To say otherwise is hugely offensive to actual librarians and libraries everywhere.

Google is, and has always been, a venture capital funded surveillance capitalist.

If scaling cloud-native applications is this expensive, just imagine what's going to happen when all of these "AI startups" (most of which are relatively simple wrappers around ChatGPT) begin to scale: a16z.com/2021/05/27/cost-of-cl

- Verifiable credentials allow you to share information about yourself and others in a temper-proof and end-verifiable way. VC contains the issuer's signature, a person, and an organization that creates a data statement.
- or verifiable presentation solves a problem of proof of Ownership. It is like an envelope with multiple from different issuers or self-issued statements combined with your signature proving your data ownership.
