The FireWire PCI card I thought froze my TAM works after all! Maybe it was bad luck, a bad connection, or I'm just not used to 1997 boot times 😄
I don't see any extensions and FireWire driver installers say Mac OS 9.1 is too new, so hopefully it "just works"—gonna pick up a FireWire drive to try it out.
It'd be great to load it up with a bunch of disk images and keep my original CD-ROM discs safe. Make it easy to demo lots of games at #VCFSouthEast too!
Really enjoyed going to my first Atlanta Historical Computing Society meeting (they are who puts on #VCFSouthEast). Glad I brought the TAM as it was cool for some folks to enjoy seeing it. And I got an idea for an exhibit I might do at #VCFSouthEast next year!
Today's post is a set of photos of the coolest computers I saw at #vcfsoutheast, the Vintage Computer Festival. https://codingitwrong.com/2023/08/04/highlights-from-vintage-computer-festival-southeast-2023
I'm sure I'll go to #vcfsoutheast next year (I live in Atlanta), but if I only go to one *other* #vcf, which should it be? Might as well go to East as I'm on the East coast? Or is it worth the trip to West? I mean I do want to see the CHM someday…
I knew I was into #VCFSouthEast but I didn't expect such a come-down. Really missing it!
Incidentally, I got Linux Mint running great on my new iMac, but it runs so hot I can't run it in my office here all day 😅💦💦💦
After my experience at #vcfsoutheast, I'm convinced that I will absolutely buy Mac hardware at any future #vcf I go to; willpower doesn't come into it. The sun will rise and I will buy classic Mac hardware.
Currently making a dream list and trying to figure out how to rearrange my house to make more space.
@ActionRetro hah I just bought the 2009 at #vcfsoutheast. Plan is to put Haiku and try a variety of Linux distros on it. Looking forward to this video!
Not exactly retro but I picked up a 24" aluminum iMac. Never had an all-in-one since my family's Bondi Blue, and I like the design of this generation. Ironically it might be most useful as a Windows gaming machine or a Linux box! #vcfsoutheast
Goddammit I just found out from @ActionRetro's video that the G5 tower here is one of the most powerful PowerPC systems, now I have to convince myself not to buy *that* too. https://youtu.be/BF18eQrYlHQ #vcfsoutheast
Thread of the most interesting computers I saw at #vcfsoutheast, with a big finale if you're an Apple person like me! https://bitbang.social/@CodingItWrong/110794858598138979
If you're in the Atlanta area and into #retrocomputing, you should definitely swing by #vcfsoutheast in the next few days while it's happening! A lot of really great stuff.
And now, the coolest thing I found: a working Apple Lisa! Proof I was there, and a video of using the GUI. So interesting how much it's like Macintosh (even with multiple apps!), and yet not quite. https://youtu.be/Wuv-ZiIInSc #vcfsoutheast
A machine running Visi On, an early GUI I have yet to dive into the history of. #vcfsoutheast
An IBM PC, not sure if the original, but certainly an early one. No PCjr unfortunately! That was what we had. #vcfsoutheast
A variety of Apple IIs including a dark-gray one (!) produced in partnership with Bell & Howell. #vcfsoutheast
A variety of well-known computers: Radio Shack TRS-80, Commodore VIC-20, and BBC Micro. #vcfsoutheast
An IMSAI 8080, by an early company that sold a ton of computers but then burned out. #vcfsoutheast
Here are the highlights of what I saw at #vcfsoutheast! (Please forgive details I get wrong, I'm new to computer history)
An Altair 8800b-dm, a late model of the first commercial personal computer.
@yakkoj I love seeing these photos and being like "I *just* saw a ton of computers like these at #vcfsoutheast tonight!"
