Here is my video from the Vintage Computer Festival West #vcfwest this weekend. The 4 computers at the start of the fist video (disc) are my exhibit, showcasing how crazy fast computers got over the span of only 10 years. The rest of the video is me just walking around the show floor. There was also a consignment area, freebie table, and a bunch of back to back to back talks, but I missed all those since I was at my booth the whole time. Video was recorded on a Sony HDR-UX5 Mini DVD Camcorder. #retrocomputing

LOL, no, this is from #vcfwest
It’s so hard to take photos of CRTs because a difference in tens of milliseconds can make the difference between a clean shot and banding.
I went to #VCFWest today to practice shooting CRTs, and got mixed results. All of these results were taken at nominally 1/60 sec shutter speed.
The first image shows a clean shot—on two CRTs, no less! No banding at all.
The next image shows a slightly dark band. This indicates that what my camera thinks is 1/60 second is slightly *faster* than what the CRT thinks, and the raster hasn’t quite made it all the way across the screen by the time the shutter closes.
Finally, an image with a light band, indicating that the screen is refreshing faster than 60 Hz, and I’m catching a bit more than one frame’s worth of light.

Solving differential equations with meccano. This is insanely cool. #vcfwest

Day 2 and it’s filled in super fast. Gonna be an exciting day I think at #VCFwest #retrocomputing

Well day one of #VCFwest is very done. My exhibit went really well, showcasing x86 computers from about 1987 to 1997 and how rapidly computer power increased during that time. The PC fans super loved it. I’m expecting Saturday to be totally nuts! Can’t wait. #retrocomputing

Here’s the album link that’s going to be updated with #VCFWest stuff as I upload it.
Day one was a blast! I had lots of fun.
I need vintage tech nerds opinions here. Boosts appreciated but please don’t vote unless you find vintage tech interesting.
So I picked up this Sony HDR-UX5 and I love it. I’ll be taking it with me to #VCFwest to get video of all the cool stuff there. It can record 20 min HD to a mini DVD. It can also record a lot more video at normal DVD resolution. My question is, should I bother? It’s never going to be as good or convenient to use as my modern iPhone 14 Pro. And if I do use it should I stick with the authentic “low res” DVD or use the HD option? I’m going to use it regardless, but really want to hear thoughts and opinions here from fellow vintage tech fans. #retrocomputing
All loaded up for #VCFwest last night. Everything got a final test, each machine tested with the intended keyboard, mouse, speakers and display. Took pictures of all the consignment items, will just be a few large things to free up some much needed shelf space. I honestly didn’t think it would all fit. Would have preferred to have CRT’s on all 4 machines but I only have 2 plus the tiny VGA CRT there. The last machine is getting a 4:3 Dell LCD. #retrocomputing
Printing the info sheets for the machine I’m bringing to #VCFwest next weekend. Getting all these machines ready to go and writing up all these info sheets has taken up nearly all my free hobby time I can set aside. Was it worth it? Hell yes! I do own a laser printer. It could crank these all out in the time it would take this dot matrix printer to print out the header of one of these! But it sounds so good. Absolute music to my ears. #retrocomputing
Kermit is ready for Vintage Computer Fest West once again! Kermit is a Macintosh SE/30 in a green MacEffects case with a green CRT screen, custom green LED fan, green hard drive LED and more. Check him out at Macintosh Librarian’s booth 🍏#vintageapple #vcfwest
