New game to me in Seas of Havoc. Definitely a NDTPA (no desire to play again) #boardgame for me and another who played. Bit of a jumble of a design and a few weaknesses in the components. Some redeeming features did not make up for so-so gameplay.

We followed up with the classic Can't Stop. That went down well with 2 newcomers to the game. I actually won a game with dice. Wow!

The Heat: Pedal to the Metal #boardgame has been a group regular over the last few months. As a card based racing game it works very well. The “heat” mechanic adds both choice & risk. I have still not managed to get the timing right. But it was close.
Paul described QE as “High Society 2.0”. QE is an auction game with a twist. Only the winner and the auction leader know the winning bid. Whomever bid the most in the game cannot win.

1st play for me of Star Wars Outer Rim by FFG. Nice use of the IP. As much as I like Firefly The Game; SW:OR does it better as a RPG complete missions style #boardgame you can actually finish in a few hours.
Also played were Heat, Federation, Port Royal, and Incan Gold.
“Brandi”, the ESB style bitter is still between batches. After trying the Hefeweizen and various IPAs I’m sticking with their American Pale Ale.

Btw, some advice when typing you name into the con badge system. Check your spelling. Even short names like Tim can be misspelled.

My total number different board games played is edging closer to 1000. So I am trying to play new and different games. John suggested "Crusaders: Thy Will Be Done". Well, it's historically themed so why not?
It was not familiar at all. When I came to logging the play on #BGG lo and behold I had playtested the game twice back in 2015. Absolutely no memory of that at all!

Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer in Moorpark
Folks were slow arriving so we started with some light fillers with Llama and Love Letter. The main games were both pirate themed in Libertalia and Feed The Kraken. After mulling over options for 6 the newcomers were eager to play Ready Set Bet. An iPad acted as the race controller allowing all to play unencumbered by one player rolling the dice and narrating the races. We ended with the trick taking card game (Fantasy) Wizard.

The main course on our table was Great Western Trail Argentina board game. It was a long teach for Bob. It flowed well once we got going. Individual player turns are quick.
Paul lead the other table through Libertalia and 3 games of 7 Wonders Architects.

Two new games for me with Illimat and Cursed Court.
Illimat is an interesting take on card collection via suits with the box rotating
Cursed Court was picked up by John for 5 bucks in a #boardgame virtual flea market. Elements of roulette betting and area control with lots of plastic bits.
I'd play both of these games again.

Chris & Chelsea were in town so we interrupted their sightseeing to mark my 900th recorded play of BSG. What a great excuse to get together and play F2F instead of online using TTS.
My t-shirt was spot on for the 900th game. After a very humany start, even from Cylon leader John, I became the lone Cylon at the Sleeper phase. Yikes.
Never fear, the cylons won.
Game 901 was close but was a human win. #sosayweall

A fun few days of #boardgames

Monday was an extended #VCSBG gaming session due to Memorial Day. Played games with folks I have not seen in ages. Played some new games to me as well.

I teach games a lot but not usually to 1st Graders. Guiding a few groups of budding gamers through a simple word building game was a bunch of work. Rolling a dice properly is a lif skill.

Last night I played games 898 & 899 of #BattlestarGalactica #boardgame . Two fun and close games. it still delivers the goods!

Two 1st plays for me. Warsaw City of Ruins followed by March of the Ants. Warsaw is tile drafting over 6 epochs. Lots of historical details in a tight evolving game.
March of the Ants is a very stabby ant themed 4X game played over 4 turns. It’s a tight limited action game too. Lots of weird & wonderful head, thorax, and abdomen evolutions to add to your ants.

Paul liked our previous play of Tulip Bubble so much he bought the #boardgame
He almost won again. I’m still terrible at the game. But if you like tight market value manipulation games then this is a good un. We ended with a half dozen rounds of the co-op trick taking card game The Crew Mission Deep Sea. I can see the appeal over the base game due to more replayability.
Meanwhile the other table tackled Scythe.

Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames & #craftbeer in Moorpark, CA. Haven’t played Obsession aka Downton Abbey the #boardgame since the before times. It’s heavy on the theme & a bit too random for the tight #EuroGames fan. If you immerse yourselves in the theme it flows nicely. Keep the matriarch of the family at hand to kick out those unwanted guests! But only once they are of no further use!
Quacks with expansion and plastic bits, Not Alone, Cosmic Encounter, & Incan Gold hit the other tables.

John had arranged to play Mosaic beforehand. Quite surprisingly they finish in time and thus could fit in a quick game of the classic Nuclear Escalation #boardgame

It was only apt that a Catan #boardgame had to hit the table to commemorate the designer Klaus Teuber. Starfarers Catan has a bunch of improvements over the basic game. Not just the rather phallic spaceship that performs key roles & replaces the wood for sheep jokes as the comic element. Sorry, not sorry. It was a tight game for the 4-players.
Revive, Photosynthesis, Jabbas Palace, and even chess also hit the table.

Mostly we play multiplayer. Well, it is group game night. This time we also played some 2-player games. Both mine and Bob’s 1st play of Twilight Struggle Read Sea. Inhuman Condition was played on another table.
The Medici dice game went down well. I need to play it. Medici has the clever auction mechanic. How do the dice replace that?

First time for Deal with the Devil. It uses an app and plays with 4 players only.
With 6 then 7 players remaining the other group first went for Cartographers then onto Ready Set Bet. Both were hits with the players although both had card legibility issues around such a large table. Last #boardgame for us was 7 Wonders Architects. Teaching seems to take more time than to play. It’s light but fun especially with 📯 and 🐈️ noises!

Monday night #boardgames & #craftbeer with the #VCSBG Meetup group. With some folks delayed we first played some short games. Then we reshuffled folks into longer games. With Wingspan + Oceania full I jumped into my first play of Lords of Waterdeep in over 10 years. With 5 players it was a tight game that still has solid yet not dazzling gameplay. Which is much as I remember.
A few quick and lighter games such as Archer Love Letter and LLAMA finished a good evening. 👍

Ready Set Bet was played with the app instead of a GM. We experimented with different timings for the app. 5 seconds per horse movement roll was too slow. 2 was too fast. 3.5 was about right. I didn’t win. It’s a fun horse racing/betting game though.
Medici is another tight yet simple #reinerknizia #boardgame design. It’s always useful to have a simple yet thinky option that actually works with 6 players.
Tekhenku, Love Letter etc were also played.
