I recommended one of my good non-vegan friends a number of films with a POV, and he thanked me for the recommendations. In turn he suggested I check out the movie , directed by . I see that it is the film adaptation of the book by the same name, written by . I had ambivalence in buying the book when I saw it on the shelves last Christmas, and chose against it in the end due to Foer not being vegan.

The movie however I felt I was able to watch online, and so in respect to my friends recommendation, I gave it a chance. The movie I have to say, I did enjoy, though I was disappointed it didn't promote a stronger message.

It ticks some things for me:
-Factory farming animals is bad. ✅
-Shows how farmers are stuck in a contract with big corporations to do their bidding. ✅
-Showcasing the incredible amount of feces that gets dumped in the environment, polluting our planet. ✅
-Talks about the excessive antibiotic use on these animals. ✅

But it also has some crosses for me:
-It tried to make it seem if we went to "the good old days" then the animals will be happy. Environmentally, going to the good old days is not feasible. ❌
-It talks about humanely raised animal meat and animal dairy. That is unfortunately a bit of an . ❌

Overall, I will thank my friend for the recommendation, and in turn, suggest he check out . 😂

Continuing on from my little film watching phase, I finally made time to watch , and if I haven't made the connection by now, I would have after watching this film.

Directed by and fantastically narrated by , it gives an overview of how humans use (abuse) other animals. The film is categorised into , , , , and . The scenes were difficult to watch, and I couldn't help but simply feel sad. 😞

The quality of the footage shows it's age (2005), though it doesn't change the fact that all the horrendous ways animals are treated in the hands of human, no matter how grainy the footage may appear.

Quality of film footage is far more superior in the film (directed by , from ), which was filmed in 2018. The film footage is of a higher quality and is also categorised by animal, going into excruciating detail about how these poor creatures suffer, by the billions (or rather, trillions).

Despite this, I wouldn't disregard Earthlings, and recommend it to anyone who wants to have their eyes opened!

Both films are rated well on and sadly both aren't rated on (I wonder why there haven't been any critical film reviews of both these films?).

Both are free to watch on YouTube and on their official website.

I saw another film recently, and while it is not by name, it all but confirms it throughout the movie.

The movie was (available on Netflix), and it feels like an updated version of (in fact there are a few 'cameos' of some of the people from the original film). I believe it was very well done stylistically, and I found the animations when discussing the science quite nice. Also, the appearance of was, I feel, a great boost to the movement. In fact, I found the executive team consisted of quite a line up, in addition to Arnold the executive producers included:

-
-
-
-
-

(There's debates on their dedication to the movement, as I am sure some will point out.)

Not sure how I feel about the section on the erection talk but it seems like the film was targeting a male based audience at that point!

The conclusion was quite clear though, a , doesn't hinder an athlete, and you can get tasty food out of a vegan diet.

It is rated well on and is rated 'fresh' on .

After watching and , I made some time to check out a few other similar movies.

I first saw , and the message was very clear to me...

If you don't eat, but like and admire the intelligence of:
- 🐳
- 🐬
- 🦈
and
- 🐙 (side note, ! 🐙🦑),

Then you shouldn't be eating of any kind, and you should very well adopt a / . 🐟🌱🐠

Directed by Ali Tabrizi and available on Netflix, it has the same style as the previous films directed by Kip Andersen, so that could be seen as either a +ve or a -ve, depending on your bias. I thoroughly enjoyed it, finding the whale hunt and the subsequent whaler interview particularly powerful.

It is rated well on and is rated 'fresh' on .

The second film I saw was . This I found to be a much better film overall in presenting the history, science and research in benefit to a whole foods plant based diet. Sadly, I feel like the way it was filmed will put some people off (some -ve reviews talk about it being slow/boring (c.f. What The Health being over the top)). I personally didn't feel that. In fact, I am currently watching the Forks Over Knives Extended Interviews film, because I want to know more! It is the kind of film I wish someone recommended to me when it came out! It's the scientist in me talking. 🧑‍🔬

I recently watched 2 (dare I call them) films, even if not advertised as such:

1st: What The Health
2nd: Cowspiracy

Both directed by Kip Andersen, and both streaming on Netflix but also available to buy from their official website. They are rated decently on but theres not much critic reviews on .

I thoroughly liked both of them (naturally that comes with my bias - can relate!). I believe people have criticized them for inaccuracies though I think that applies to only a few stats or facts cited.

I am not sure how I feel about the "trying to get an interview and got declined/didn't answer my questions" style of documenting, but I guess it ads to the dramatic effect. In particular, I wonder what was going on with the whole thing? I wonder if he ever got to speak with them?

I would love to see a modern reviewing of them, especially Cowspiracy as it is going on to nearly 10 years old. How have the numbers changed since then? For e.g., do cows need less or more water? What The Health (about 6 years old) would also be interesting in that regard as there would be lots of scientific articles published since then commenting on the many benefits of a style of diet.

My next viewing will be (you guessed it) Seaspiracy, and then I am keen to see many more such films. Keen to hear additional recommendations.
