It is _the_ strawberry. Never had much luck in the past, but a freind gave me some runner sprouts and I've been absolutely babying them. Nice shady spot by the fence, buckets of water. One of 3 plants decided to strawb, the others have gone for disgustingly healthy amounts of greenery. Fingers crossed they survive the year. #VeggieGardening #GardeningAu #BrisbaneGardening

I didn't have ducks on the garden pest bingo card, but there goes the lettuce. Least they fertilised.
Not overly concerned, will plant more lettuce. Just glad possums haven't found it yet.

Happy 2.5 month anniversary to my tatsoi seedlings!
Brassicas are hard lol.
First time growing sweet potatoes. The plant has been looking sad lately and we needed something for dinner so figured it was time to harvest.
I was surprised at how easy these tubers came out - they snapped out clean when I started digging in the pot. They're weirdly perfect looking. Tasty too. Fed the plant some fresh dirt as thanks, hopefully it'll yeild some more next year.
Jealous of my mom’s spinach, which she tells me overwintered with no protection #gardening #VeggieGardening
Pretty sure I put my garlic in too early (first time trying), been 4 weeks and I have just 3 sprouts. Dug up a couple of cloves that hadnt done much except look a little softer at the edge, and one that rotted. Do I give up and put another round in?? #GardeningAU #VeggieGardening #garlic #BrisbaneGardening

#introduction post: Am starting this account to capture vapid chatter around #veggieGardening (#vegetableGardening), that I don't want in my work-ish account. Said #veggieGarden is #Brisbane based so particularly interested in #brisbaneGardening . Also interested in #sustainabilty, (the reduce consumption, anti-greenwashing, pro-science flavours), #bugs and selected aspects of #permaculture. Now off to go follow a bunch of people!

This #summer we have about 8 cherry #tomato plants in our vegetable garden. We only planted about 4, the rest were self sown from the tomato plants we planted last summer. The 8 tomato plants have more or less taken over our veggie garden now that the sweet corn, carrots and stawberries have finished for the season. The only plants that are competing with them are the pumpkin plants, but thats a whole other story! So for the last month of so we've been harvesting an abundance of these little beauties. The harvest of tomatoes is producing about this much each week. It's a good thing we like food which has lots tomatoes in it!

Here, have a #ThrowbackThursday to my former, much lamented garden that I lost after 7 years of tending it, due to the #HousingCrisis. The whole thing was done on the cheap with lots of found materials and recycled bits and bobs.

First tomato! January 19th, almost a month later than the earliest I’ve had something from this variety, “Gold Nugget.” I got the seeds from Southern Harvest in Tasmania, who are great at recommending varieties that do well in cooler climates. I’ve had Gold Nugget before Christmas in the past, but the slow rainy spring and early summer really delayed things. Ah well. There’ll surely be more along soon.

Anyway, I’m going to leave the other spuds there for now, and attempt to give them a bit more water. Fingers crossed.
But if you were wondering why #MinimumChips is looking so scant lately, this is why.

So, what did I get from 5 months of garden-bed space? These three spuds, which I’d estimate at a bit over half a kilo.
I’m not sure what they needed but didn’t get. Warmth earlier in the season would have helped, I’m sure. They weren’t bogged down by the rains as they were in a raised bed and hilled up besides, and the soil isn’t clay-y. In digging up the bed it was clear that the last few weeks have dried the soil out a lot, even though I’ve been watering. I guess it all runs off or evaporated from the hilling-up. Still, it should have been ok.
I didn’t amend the soil particularly, other than doing my hilling up with sifted soil from the next bed over, where prunings and other garden waste have been rotting down for years; it had more organic matter than the bed I started with, but wasn’t what I’d call incredibly rich compost. Nor did I do a pH test, though the weeds growing there (chickweed, fumitory, wild radish, black nightshade, cleavers, the odd dandelion) suggest it’s pretty neutral veggie garden soil. It’s not like spuds are usually super fussy, in my experience.

So I had been trying to figure out why one of my snake beans was refusing to latch onto the support. Then I noticed all the others climbing clockwise- a quick google and I learn these things have handedness! (Photo shows the plant correcting my 'wrong' winding).
Suppose this sort of thing keeps biology interesting! #veggiegardening #plantsareweird
