I’m really looking forward to #WeAreStillHere, a new weekly column coming to #VeriteNews about #NativeAmerican cultural influences in #NewOrleans and across #Louisiana, from a local native’s perspective.

For #BlackHistoryMonth, #VeriteNews is highlighting important stories in #NOLA and #Louisiana #History. Today’s story is about how students at Francis T. Nicholls HS fought to improve inclusivity and leave some of it’s #Confederate symbology behind in the late 60’s.
In some ways, they started a process that would eventually see the school renamed after Fredrick Douglas in the 90’s.
Unfortunately, several schools across the state still use the “Rebel” as their mascot.

#VeriteNews, a non-profit newsroom in #NOLA, is #hiring!
Anyone following me knows that they are a big part of my #LocalNews feed, so it will come as no surprise that I’m excited to see #NonProfitNews growing in #Louisiana. This is doubly true for organizations like Verite that seek to amplify the voices of the underrepresented!
Try to help expand their newsroom with a boost!

Like many other areas of #PublicPolicy in the US, #AffordableHousing has been under-invested in, forcing families to relocate/live in terrible conditions. Acre Road in #JeffersonParish #Louisiana is just one example of how crumbling public #housing can’t be adequately replaced with housing vouchers. It’s also an example of the kind of #history we can lose in the process.
