@wormerama I’ve been doing bokashi since September and have used bought in inoculated bran. When the current lot is finished I’ll just spray with homemade lactic acid bacteria from rice water. I’ll add sawdust or wood chip if there’s any excess moisture but I tap out the liquid anyway.

The pre-bokashi after fermenting for three weeks or so can also be fed to worms (instead of covering it with soil) and they seem to like it.

Between the worm bin and the bokashi we have no food waste to put out now at all.

When I clean the farm I usually wash it over the same garden bed and drop a little on it every time.

Over winter I have noticed a clear improvement in the soil where the casting is dropped.

This is a breakthrough because if it is done over several beds I will facilitate the applications.

The Youtube channel Growveg is one of my favorites, they just released a video on how to get your soil ready for spring. And yes, it is time to apply compost to your garden beds if your climate zone allows it.

Keep your covered.

This weekend one of the main projects will be to harvest some and to make some potting mix to start indoors. Yay, the season can start.

If I could give only one piece of advice about how to setup a worm bin.

Don't overfeed it.

Let the worms the time to consume the food and feed them about 2 times a week the volume of food they need.

Not doing this will attract unwanted visitors to your bin.

A lot of pepper have sprouted in a bin, the moisture, temperature, and nutrients made those seeds germinate because I keep the worm casting shallow. The love it.

I have learned from the youtube channel Plant Obsessed that avocado seeds love to germinate in worm bins.

January is the moment to start a bin if you want to have some for and .

It takes about 3 months for a bin to be ready to harvest.

Then you can either do aerated or apply the casting on your beds.

Leachate is the result of the excess moisture that you can collect from a bin

The main problem that you will have from it is that there is a good chance that this liquid will be anaerobic. Bad have developed in this liquid because it has been standing for too long without oxygen.

@harshad That is so right. We owe everything we have to the life in our soils that sustains us.

Even though I know my soil is alive with worms there’s always a bit of relief to see them whenever I uncover any soil. They are a joy.

@suevb @nicole2g Mine are in the shed too with a little extra cardboard wrapped around the outside of their bin to keep them a bit warmer while still well ventilated. -4°C last night. I can’t check them until tomorrow. 🪱

@nicole2g @compost I’ve never used peat as an ingredient in making my own compost but I will add leaf mould to a compost mix for seedlings.

Next year I may experiment a little and add or made from rice water to the potting mix.

The compost is made from anything and everything I can get my hands on at the time. I will compost everything except brambles.
