Some administration is apparently doing their job:
In Amsterdam, there are 60 (!) public vermicomposting bins on the streets.
There is a lock with a number code to open the worm bin and convert your kitchen waste into perfect worm humus.

The most interesting effect is probably raising public awareness for waste and nutrient (re)cycling, as well as some community building.

A good morning in the #garden. Potted on the #tomatoes into buckets, dressed them with #vermicompost and gave them a good drink. Bit of a tidy up, including helping neighbour cut off an overhanging tree limb from their side (going to #hugelkultur that beast, much to neighbour's confusion). Now making shokupan buns to have with roast pork later. But it's getting hot so...siesta first!

Mon vermicomposteur fête ses 3ans, wouhou !
Très fier de mes chads vers de terre qui ont survécu à leur 3ème hiver malgré le froid intense et mon manque de motivation à les protéger. Ils auront continué leur petite vie sous une bâche, sans serre et j’en reviens toujours pas. Je leur ai redonné la blinde de papier/carton + chaux pour déshumidifier le milieu et éviter le gel. Pas une seule « explosion » (oui, ça explose un ver quand ça gêle !!) et une population stable. Vivement le printemps que leur métabolisme accélère et que je puisse à nouveau les nourrir régulièrement de déchets alimentaires !

So, I’ve started my in ground wormery 👍 Found a few good sites about what to add and what not to add. But when filling my kettle this morning - some loose limescale to dispose of. Can that go into a wormery if ground up/small shards? Chemically I thought it’d be similar to the lime already in soil so safe to add but hoping for advice here from the Compostodon crew 🐛 🗑️

If I could give only one piece of advice about how to setup a worm bin.

Don't overfeed it.

Let the worms the time to consume the food and feed them about 2 times a week the volume of food they need.

Not doing this will attract unwanted visitors to your bin.

@kskilesstudio The Worm Factory 360 has kept the red wrigglers happy in our basement. We haven’t had runaway worms. We have had pleasant odors. The #Vermicompost and worm castings have been great for our gardening.

I'm finally finding my groove with the Urban Worm Bag.
I've managed to dry things out enough to harvest.
Just over a kilogram of castings harvested today and if things trend the way I think they will, this bag will produce mountains more.

Paper and cardboard waste, food scraps, expired items from the pantry...
They could have gone to a landfill. Instead they're going to improve my garden.

Got home, switched on #WaterBear and caught the end of a programme about a Brummy brickie who is running a massive worm farm in his cellar, filtering rainwater (I think) through his #vermicompost and growing #bioponic greens, selling them to restaurants, getting their food waste and closing the loop. This is basically what I would do for a living if I had a chance. 😂

Need to find the name of the programme and watch the whole thing. Sigh. Can dream.

A lot of pepper #seeds have sprouted in a #worm bin, the moisture, temperature, and nutrients made those seeds germinate because I keep the worm casting shallow. The #worms love it.

Add #carbon to a #CompostAtHome bin

Wood chips, sawdust, #cardboard, #newspaper or paper, dried leaves, #straw or hay, pine needles, nutshell, and last but not least #compost.

The more it is chopped the fastest the #fungi in your bin will process it.

Made a bait cup for my finished castings.
The screen I used last week let a lot of coccoons through so I wanted to try making a bait cup to lure them in for relocation back to a working worm bin.
It was as not at all hard as I thought it would be.
A few holes in a plastic cup, some moist bedding and food and Robert is your Mother's brother.
