This week is giving me real "captain, it's Wednesday" vibes so I went out to do some light gardening and check on the worm bin. The little guys are thriving, just eating up kitchen scraps and shredded cardboard. #vermiculture as therapy.

The worm farm seems happy and healthy and is starting to consume scraps reliably. I'm going to have to feed it more often!

The worms that will be moving in to here have just finished a winter of turning a patch of grass in to a casting covered no-dig bed. Now that growing season is coming i need to uncover that bed and let it warm up a bit. The worms have done such a great job, it’s filled with rich castings, there’s no grass left, and I didn’t have to buy in compost to start it!

We dug up the #Subpod this weekend and relocated it into a large bin in the garage. I had to move most of the contents into buckets in order to be able to get the Subpod out of the ground. 💪

I put it all back in the Subpod and the worms are now cozy where it's more dry. Exciting to see some HUGE #worms were in there! 🐛

This stuff used to be food scraps and paper waste.

Now it's (hopefully) a wonderful soil amendment.

Mon vermicomposteur fête ses 3ans, wouhou !
Très fier de mes chads vers de terre qui ont survécu à leur 3ème hiver malgré le froid intense et mon manque de motivation à les protéger. Ils auront continué leur petite vie sous une bâche, sans serre et j’en reviens toujours pas. Je leur ai redonné la blinde de papier/carton + chaux pour déshumidifier le milieu et éviter le gel. Pas une seule « explosion » (oui, ça explose un ver quand ça gêle !!) et une population stable. Vivement le printemps que leur métabolisme accélère et que je puisse à nouveau les nourrir régulièrement de déchets alimentaires !

Oh yes. Just settled 1,000 new wrigglers in to their new worm cafe here. Looking forward to adding all of its goodness to the current composting I've got going on.

If I could give only one piece of advice about how to setup a worm bin.

Don't overfeed it.

Let the worms the time to consume the food and feed them about 2 times a week the volume of food they need.

Not doing this will attract unwanted visitors to your bin.

I'm finally finding my groove with the Urban Worm Bag.
I've managed to dry things out enough to harvest.
Just over a kilogram of castings harvested today and if things trend the way I think they will, this bag will produce mountains more.

Paper and cardboard waste, food scraps, expired items from the pantry...
They could have gone to a landfill. Instead they're going to improve my garden.

A lot of pepper #seeds have sprouted in a #worm bin, the moisture, temperature, and nutrients made those seeds germinate because I keep the worm casting shallow. The #worms love it.

Add #carbon to a #CompostAtHome bin

Wood chips, sawdust, #cardboard, #newspaper or paper, dried leaves, #straw or hay, pine needles, nutshell, and last but not least #compost.

The more it is chopped the fastest the #fungi in your bin will process it.

Final stages of separating some worms from their castings so that I can scatter the castings over the patch of dead-lawn soil that I've loosened up with a fork since I don't have a useful tool for aerating it.
Now have a sore back lol
